How to claim maternity grant :

** Complete and print the application form Parental benefits for mothers (SV9) and send the form to any Kela office.

** You can also apply for maternity grant online (available in Finnish and Swedish only). To log in to Kela’s online customer service, use your online banking codes or a mobile certificate.

** Enclose with the application a certificate showing that the pregnancy has lasted 154 days and that you have undergone a medical examination before the end of the 4th month of pregnancy. This pregnancy certificate can be obtained from your doctor or from the prenatal clinic.

** Send the pregnancy certificate to any Kela office. You can also scan or take a photo of the certificate and send it over the Internet.
** Adoptive parents must enclose a certificate (form SV 94) stating that the child has been designated for placement in the adoptive family.

** If you live in the Åland Islands you should apply for maternity grant from your municipality of residence.
** Kela will send the maternity package to you by post. If you have chosen to receive the maternity grant in cash, the money will be paid into your bank account.

Application period:
The grant must be applied for at the latest two months before the expected date of birth of the child.

Application processing times and inquiries:
Each year, Kela’s Board of Directors sets target times for the processing of applications for key benefits. The application processing time is calculated from the registration of an incoming application to the issuance of a decision on it. The target time is expressed as an average, so actual processing times may vary somewhat in either direction.

One week:
Unemployment benefits (new applications 2 weeks)

Two weeks:
** Rehabilitation Allowance
** Special Care Allowance
** Reimbursements for medical and travel expenses

** School Transport Subsidy
** Conscript’s Allowance
** Maternity Grant

Three weeks:
** Entitlements to reimbursement of medicine expenses

Four weeks:
** Coverage under the Finnish social security system
** Entitlements to additiobal reimbursement of medicine expenses
** Child Maintenance Allowance

Five weeks:
** Rehabilitation determinations
** Housing Allowance for Pensioners

Six weeks:
** Disability benefits
** Waiver of child support debt

Eight weeks:
National pensions, including the disability pension and Guarantee pensions
