To be employed as a teacher in a school in New Zealand, you need to hold a current practising certificate and registration of any category from the New Zealand Teachers Council.

Check out the step by step guide to renewing your practising certificate and maintaining full registration – or download the PDF.

Once you are a fully registered teacher you need to renew your registration and practising certificate every three years.

You are eligible to maintain full registration if you:
** are of good character and fit to be a teacher
** have completed satisfactory professional development within the last three years
** have completed satisfactory recent teaching service
** have been meaningfully assessed against and have met the Registered Teacher Criteria.

How to renew your practising certificate:
If you have full registration, meet the above requirements and your practising certificate is due to expire, use the TC3 application form.

Reapplying under the subject to confirmation (STC) category:
If you currently hold full registration but have not met the requirements to maintain full registration, you may reapply for a practising certificate under the registration category subject to confirmation (STC) using the TC1A application forms.

STC registration is a category of registration for experienced teachers who, for valid reasons, have not been able to be meaningfully assessed against and meet the Registered Teacher Criteria.

Police clearance
New Zealand police clearances:
Section 124B of the Education Act 1989 requires the Teachers Council to obtain a police vet prior to issuing a practising certificate or Limited Authority to Teach. On completion of the Consent to Disclosure of Information section of the TC1, TC1A, TC3, TC4 or TC0 application forms, the Teachers Council requests information directly from the New Zealand Police Vetting and Validation Service.

Overseas police clearances:
If you have lived for a period of 12 months or more in any country other than New Zealand within the last 10 years, you must get a national police clearance certificate from that country, which covers the entire period of time you lived there. How to get an overseas police clearance

FAQ :
What do I need to be able to teach in New Zealand?
You need to be registered and to hold a current practising certificate. Registration does not expire, unless it is cancelled. Practising certificates are renewed every three years. There are three levels; provisional, full and subject to confirmation.

What’s the difference between registration and practising certificate?
The difference between ‘registration’ and ‘practising certificate’ is important. Registration shows you have met the requirements to join the teaching profession in New Zealand. Once granted, it doesn’t expire, but it can be cancelled (for example, on grounds of serious misconduct).

Registration alone doesn’t allow you to lawfully work as a teacher – you also need a current practising certificate. Your practising certificate allows you to be lawfully employed in schools, kura, kindergartens and in most positions in early childhood education settings.

Practising certificates expire after three years. If you are employed in a teaching position, you need to ensure you renew your practising certificate promptly and meet all the requirements. This includes demonstrating satisfactory recent teaching experience, satisfactory professional development, and are of good character and fit to be a teacher (including a Police vet).

How long do practising certificates last?
** Registration – doesn’t expire (unless cancelled)
** Provisional practising certificate – three years
** Full practising certificate – three years
** Subject to confirmation – three years

*Our interim registration policy allows teachers who held a practising certificate with the Teachers Council (prior to July 2015) will have automatically received a practising certificate with the Education Council. This will expire on 1 July 2017 or earlier, depending on the existing expiry date.
