Teacher Registration:
Teacher registration ensures a minimum quality standard is applied to all teachers entering or currently teaching in New Zealand’s general education system.

Teacher registration signals your official membership of the teaching profession. Registration is one of the main ways that employers, colleagues, learners and the wider community can be assured that a teacher is qualified, safe and competent.
There are different categories of registration to show how recently a teacher has met the Registered Teacher Criteria, or whether they are yet to meet them. When you achieve registration it assures future employers, parents and the public that you are satisfactorily trained, of good character and fit to be a teacher.
Practising certificates:
When your application for registration is approved you will get a practising certificate that is current for three years. With it you are legally able to be employed in a teaching position in New Zealand. A current practising certificate is mandatory for teachers in primary schools, secondary schools, free kindergartens and in many positions in early childhood education services.
Teachers need to meet specific requirements in the Education Act 1989 to be issued with registration and a practising certificate. Employers should have procedures in place to regularly check the validity of employees’ certificates.

The registration process:
If you’re in New Zealand and want to teach, the journey towards becoming a registered teacher begins with completing an initial teacher education (ITE) qualification, and progresses to provisional registration and a two-year induction and mentoring period.
When you have completed the induction period, have enough recent teaching experience and meet the Registered Teacher Criteria you can be recommended for full registration. Overseas teachers who want to teach in New Zealand have specific criteria they need to meet.
There are three categories of teacher registration in New Zealand – provisional, subject to confirmation, and full.
Provisional registration and registration subject to confirmation:
Provisionally registered teachers are usually newly qualified teachers who don’t yet have enough teaching experience to meet all of the Registered Teacher Criteria. They need to complete a broad-based programme of induction and mentoring over two years to gain full registration.
Teachers who are registered subject to confirmation are experienced teachers who have previously met all of the Registered Teacher Criteria, but have not been able to be assessed as meeting them recently. This is usually because they haven’t had enough recent teaching experience in an approved setting, or their teaching has been too part-time or casual for a meaningful assessment to have been made by their professional leader. Some teachers who apply for registration for the first time may be able to be registered subject to confirmation.
If you wish to have your application considered for registration subject to confirmation, you will need to provide evidence of:
** holding a senior teaching position (at the level of Head of Department or higher), and
** more than five years of teaching experience, and
** evidence of recent professional development, and
** evidence of professional support and guidance or appraisal involving a mentor/supervisor teacher provided for a period of at least two years

The Registered Teacher Criteria (Criteria) describe the essential knowledge and capabilities required for quality teaching in New Zealand. They apply to all teachers in their everyday professional practice seeking to gain full registration, or renew a practising certificate with full registration.
The Code of Ethics/Nga Tikanga Matatika commits registered teachers to the highest standards of professional service in promoting the learning of those they teach. The Registered Teacher Criteria and Code of Ethics should be used hand in hand.
