Membership Registration :

In order to become a member of the NHIS one needs to be registered and issued with a Health Insurance Membership ID Card.

One needs to pay the appropriate premium (except those belonging to the exempt group) to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Membership Information :
Membership of the scheme includes people in the informal sector, SSNIT Contributors, SSNIT Pensioners, the Aged (70+), Children under 18 years of age and the Indigent. In accessing health care service under the NHIS, a beneficiary has to obey the referral system termed as ‘gate-keeper system’. This requires the beneficiary to first report at a primary care facility, and subsequently to the second and third levels of care by way of referral.

The exempt group comprises :
** SSNIT Contributors
** SSNIT Pensioners
** People aged 70 years and above
** Children under 18 years
** Indigents

Registration of Members can be done at the DMHIS office, designated points or by Registered Agents and Scheme Officers who call at homes and work places. DMHIS receipts shall be issued for all payments made. NHIS Membership ID Card shall be generated after the waiting period.

Upon the issuance of a membership ID card, each Member shall be given :
** A booklet containing membership rights, obligations and privileges
** List of Healthcare Benefits under the Scheme
** List of Accredited Healthcare Providers

Premium and Registration Fee :
Indigent :
A person assessed as an INDIGENT shall be exempted from the payment of Premium and Registration fees.

SSNIT Contributor/SSNIT Pensioner :
** An applicant who is assessed as a SSNIT CONTRIBUTOR or a SSNIT PENSIONER shall be exempted from PREMIUM Payment.
** SSNIT applicant shall be asked to pay a non-refundable REGISTRATION FEE (to be determined by DMHIS).

Persons aged seventy years and above :
** An applicant, who is aged 70 years and above, shall be exempted from PREMIUM payment.
** However, such an applicant shall pay a non-refundable REGISTRATION fee.

Dependants :
A DEPENDANT of an applicant shall be exempted from PREMIUM payment.

Premium for Informal Sector :
Applicants from the Informal Sector shall pay premium and registration fee.
