NSW Apply for Digital Driver Licence

Planned for release across NSW by 2019, digital driver licences are all about saving time and making life easier.

With a trial already in progress, driver licences will soon be added to the list of digital licences you can use with the Service NSW app. A digital licence allows you to view, show, update and renew that licence. No need to visit a service centre or wait for something in the post.

Apply for the Digital Driver Licence Trial

From October 2017 to February 2018, the digital driver licence is being trialled in the city of Dubbo, NSW. If you live in Dubbo and hold an active Class C driver licence, you may be eligible to join the trial.

The trial will test the convenience and functionality of the digital driver licence. It will also help identify any other changes needed to support it in the future.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in the trial, you must :
** be a Dubbo resident (with the postcode 2830)
** hold an active, unrestricted Class C driver licence, or a Learner, P1 or P2 provisional Class C driver licence. You can participate as a rider (Class R licence), but only if you also have a valid Class C licence as well.

You will not be eligible to participate in the trial if you :
** hold a heavy vehicle licence class
** have surrendered your licence, or
** have a sanction under mandatory alcohol interlock program (MAIP) legislation applied to your licence.

Using the DDL During the Trial

You can use the DDL in two main ways :
** to establish your permission to drive at routine traffic stops and when stopped for random drug and alcohol tests, and
** as evidence of your identity and age at selected hotels within the Dubbo area (registered clubs will become part of the trial at a later stage).

** At a later stage, it is planned for the DDL trial app to be used as proof of identity in approved Service NSW transactions. Over time, it is expected that the DDL will be accepted in more customer interactions following consultation with retailers and industry bodies.

How Digital Licences Work

When the digital driver licence is made available, you’ll have the choice to “opt-in”. As with other digital licences, your driver licence will be available in the Service NSW app. You’ll still receive a plastic licence card.

Planned for release state-wide by 2019, digital driver licences will offer a range of benefits :
** Fewer cards to carry – show your identity, age and ‘permission to drive’ with a secure mobile device app (at no extra cost to your standard licence fees).
** Convenience – update your details and renew your licence from your mobile device.
** Security – control your personal information.
** Real time information – real time updates and licence specific information, including renewal reminder notifications.

Please note :
** If you link your licence to your MyServiceNSW Account, you can view some of your licence details in the Service NSW app now, but that does not make it a digital driver licence.
