RCMP Firearm License

A licence is your authorization to possess and register a firearm and to obtain ammunition. Your licence must be kept current for as long as you possess firearms in Canada.

License Types

The types of licences are as follows
For Canadian Residents 18 and Older :
** The Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) is the only licence currently available to new applicants. It is renewable every five years. As a general rule, applicants must have passed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

** Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC) issued under the former law are considered to be licences. They need to be replaced with a PAL before they expire.

For Non-Residents Aged 18 and Older :
** A Non-resident firearms declaration that has been confirmed by a customs officer is deemed to be a temporary licence for up to 60 days.

For Individuals aged 12 to 17 :
** A Minors’ Licence will enable young people to borrow a non-restricted rifle or shotgun for approved purposes such as hunting or target shooting.

Generally, the minimum age is 12 years, but exceptions may be made for younger people who need to hunt to sustain themselves and their families. Applicants must have taken the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and passed the test.

** Once a person turns 18, they are no longer eligible for a minor’s licence. Instead, they must apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and pay the applicable fee. Currently, the fee only applies to the first PAL.

For Firearms Business

** A Firearms Business Licence will permit a business to carry on only those firearm-related activities specified on the licence.

** Any of the licences listed above will allow you to possess a firearm and obtain ammunition in Canada. Only the Possession and Acquisition Licence will allow you to acquire or permanently import a firearm.

Apply New Possession Only Licence

A Possession Only Licence (POL) is valid for five years and allows firearm owners to possess firearms, including borrowed firearms, of any class their licence allows.

Restricted or prohibited firearms require a registration certificate from the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP). The POL does not allow for the acquisition of more firearms, only the Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) does.

New Initiative :
** A new policy initiative, which encourages holders of expired POLs to return to compliance with the Firearms Act and firearms licensing regulations, was launched and will continue to be in effect until May 16, 2015.

License Eligibility Criteria

** They previously held a POL which expired naturally (was not revoked or refused);
** They are in possession of at least one firearm; and,
** They meet all public safety requirements in order to possess firearms.
** There is no fee for the new POL.

** Previous POL holders with a PAL application still in process may apply for a new POL under this initiative. Individuals who have had a POL refused or revoked are not eligible to apply for the new POL.

** Grandfathering privileges for prohibited firearms are permanently lost when a POL expires. They cannot be reinstated after obtaining a new POL. In these situations, prohibited firearms must be lawfully disposed of.

Guidance on how to lawfully dispose of a firearm can be obtained through one of the contact options listed at the end of this fact sheet.

  1. I can’t seem to get to the right place to renew my POL on line.

  2. how do I check the status on my fire arm lic. application.

  3. application stamped dec. 14–2018. Advised that processing takes 45 days. Was there a one two or three ahead of the 45?

  4. I have sent renewal form and money on April 5th, 2019. Please let me know the status.

  5. Does anyone answer questions from this website? I also renewed my licence in April and would like to know when I can expect it however, I see many people have posed the same question and I have seen no answers. I guess this is just a place to vent not get answers.

  6. I have sent my renewal form and haven’t received it yet. This was in April and haven’t heard anything at all. Where do I go to see the status of my renewal?

  7. Where can I check status of my renewal? I did this in April and have not heard since.

  8. As others have indicated, there is nowhere to find and print a renewal form. The one link I found came back with a 404 Error – Page not found. Emailing RCMP Moncton didn’t work when I was trying to change my address and I did figure out how to do that on this site. Printing a blank renewal form so that I can get my license renewed doesn’t work because there is no link to the form! Calling RCMP Moncton doesn’t work. I have had the same results as others who have commented here. Local RCMP referred me to Moncton. I don’t have a credit card and will have to pay using a money order and mail in the renewal. I don’t think anyone other than those of us who are frustrated read these comments, but here’s hoping someone does and they fix all the broken bits!

  9. This whole website is garbage, You make as difficult as you can to register.

  10. Nothing on this site works, you cannot even print a hard copy to send in. I spent several frustrating hours for trying.

  11. The website does not work, you get directed to a US based company for web problems. THE RCMP needs to get into the game and provide a reliable service.

  12. Very confusing, been a hunter for 0ver 40 years, served in military, member of legion, chairman for air cadet squadron. Registered firearms when the program started became ill in 2013 and after 4years of being unable to enjoy the outdoors and hunting have the opportunity to enjoy hunting again with my grandson who just turned 12 and pass on all the safety and experience his dad and I have to him to find my pol had expired called and after long times on hold and confusing messages and forms that wont open on line, am told I will have to start over and go through all the courses to own a 410 and go hunting with my grandson. Apparently I can renew pol as it expired naturally but cannot get the form (or) a honest answer from anyone.

  13. Confusing? after many office closed responses, I finally got thru to an automated answer. I entered the expiry date as it appeared on the licence renewal. Month/Day/Year (October 6,2018), Later realized the order was reversed on the auto response. The whole process is complicated (especially for seniors). This error should have been caught before mailing out the Licence Renewal. I am not familiar with Pay Pal. I use cheque, credit card or cash. As a senior I have finally become exempt for buying a fishing licence. Has anyone considered removing the fee for seniors? My budget is really tight and I don’t have an extra $60. Please forward my concerns to the people able to improve the Status Quo. I live in Edmonton and would like my Liberal MP to also have a copy.

  14. I have been calling 1-800-731-4000 for some time now and no matter what prompt I choose the answer is always “the office is closed.” I checked with the local RCMP (Salmon Arm, BC) and was advised to press “0” after the operator’s message, and I still get the same response. My application had been completed and sent. Please advise.

    1. I think this is a bogus number so, they don’t have to deal with you.

  15. I am trying to print a renewal form for a friend of mine as he does not have access to a computer, it is renewal for his POL license, and I am unable to find the form to print.
