How To Extend Visitor’S Visa Stay:

I. Definition of Visitor and Types of Visitor’s Visa with Different Validity Periods:
1. Definition of Visitor: Visit of less than 6 months in Taiwan.
2. Types of Visitor’s Visa: Visa-waiver or with validity period of 14, 30, 60 or 90 days.

II. Extension:
1. General Extension:
(1) Any visitor with a need of continued visit may file an application for extension before the expiry of the validity period with the service center of the National Immigration Agency of the place of his/her stay. Each extension shall not exceed the validity period of the original visa. The total period of stay shall not exceed 180 days.

(2) If the foreigner satisfies the condition of extension before the expiry of the validity period but does not have the full application documents, he/she may first file a request for consent from the service center of the National Immigration Agency of the place of his/her stay and then file the application for extension with the service center within 15 days from acquisition of the complete documents. If the foreigner does not obtain the approval for extension after the first filing, the overstay period shall start from the expiry date of the originally granted validity period.

2. Special Extension:
(1) Any foreigner who has stayed for a total of 180 days but who still needs to extend the stay due to force majeure or other material event should file an application with the service center of the National Immigration Agency of the place of his/her stay.

(2) Any person entering into the territory with a visa on arrival or visa waiver is not allowed to seek any extension. However, if the person cannot exit the territory before the expiry of the validity period due to force majeure or other material event, an application should be filed with the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs or its branch institution to seek visitor’s visa.

3. Calculation of Stay Period: From the day following the entry into the territory.

4. Documents Required:
(1) One copy of Foreigner Stay Application Form.
(2) Original copy and one photocopy of the passport (original copy will be returned after verification).
(3) Relevant documents of proof.

5. Responsible Authority: Local service center of the National Immigration Agency.

Extension of stay is administered by each county/city service center of the National Immigration Agency.

FAQs :
When to apply for visitor visa extension? How long is extension up to?
The application for visitor visa extension shall be submitted within 15 days prior to the due validity of visit and each extension may not exceed the validity permitted by the original visa. A total sum of visit may not exceed 6 months or 180 days.

How to apply for visitor visa extension of a foreign spouse’s parents visiting in the R.O.C.?
** The applicant shall be present in person at the local NAI service center where a foreign spouse is in principle.

Required documents :
1. A 60-day or 90-day visitor visa subject to extension.
2. Original and copy of passport.
3. One application form.
4. A certificate of lineal relations.
5. A Power of Attorney is required for the application by an agent.

How shall a foreigner apply for visitor visa extension upon entry via a 60-day visitor visa at the verge of applying for a resident visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the due validity of visit is at hand?
The applicant in need of longer residence in the R.O.C. failing to meet any circumstances relating to issuing a resident visa by a visitor visa prescribed by the Immigration Act shall apply for a resident visa to the Bureau of Consular Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The applicant unable to acquire a resident visa within the validity of visit shall apply for visitor visa extension at the local NIA service center along with related files and the proof of reception issued by the MOFA. Within 15 days of acquiring a resident visa, the applicant shall apply for an ARC at the local NIA service center along with related documents.
