Apply for Proof of Age Card

The Intoxicating Liquor Act 1988 (Age Card) Regulations 2010 provide for a voluntary Age Card scheme. Age Cards can be obtained by individuals aged 18 and over to show that they have reached the legal age for purchasing alcohol.

An Age Card is a “proof of age card” and not an “Identity Card”. The Age Card is solely for the purpose stated above and should not be obtained or used for any other purpose.

The Age Card shows:
** Your name
** Your Date of Birth
** Your Photograph
** Relevant Security Features

Please Read Before Proceeding With Your Application:
** You must be aged 18 years or over to apply for an Age Card
** You must have either a Birth Certificate, Passport or GNIB Card to apply for an Age Card
** You must supply a colour passport photo
** The primary ID Document you select in your Application must be the same document as that which you produce in your local Garda Station when having your Application authenticated
** The name on your Application must match the name on your Primary Identification *
** All correspondence will be posted to the address you provided in your Application
** The address provided must be within Ireland
** Your details will be used solely for the purpose of this Application which may include contacting you should the need arise
** You should double check all details before submission as changes cannot be made to any details once the Submit button has been pressed
** Non standard Irish/English alphabetical characters will not appear on your age card
** Your application form will expire in 90 days and is non refundable *
** If paying with an Age Card voucher this will expire after 90 days and is non refundable *

What age do I have to be to get an Age Card?:
You must be aged 18 years or over to apply for an Age Card.

How do I pay for my Age Card?:
You can pay for your card by either
** Using a Credit Card or a Debit Card
or
** Using an Age Card Voucher – this can be purchased at any Post Office.

What is the cost of the Age Card?:
The fee for an Age Card is €10.

What is an Age Card Voucher?:
The age card voucher is a payment option available to purchase from any Post Office. It is similar to a mobile phone credit docket. You will be able to input the sixteen digit number on the payment screen when you select the Voucher Payment option. Once the number and pin have been entered and the Confirmed Payment button selected the voucher is validated and cannot then be reused. The voucher is valid for three months from the date of purchase. If not used within that time the voucher will expire and can no longer be used to purchase an age card. There is no facility for a refund on an expired voucher.

What documentation do I need to get my Age Card?:
You will need the following:
** Your Birth Certificate or your GNIB (Garda National Immigration Bureau) Card or your valid Passport (in date)
** One other form of ID.
** One recent passport photograph.

How long will it take to get my card?:
** You should receive your application form within three working days.

** You should then receive your Age Card within 10 working days of handing in your application form to your local Garda Station.

Please note: You can keep track of your application by entering your Form Number in the Track my Card section of www.agecard.ie.

What is my Form Number?:
Your Form Number is the six digit number quoted on your Application Form and also on your Receipt.

What happens if I don’t have a Birth Certificate, GNIB Card or a passport?:
Unfortunately, without at least one of the above you will be unable to apply for an Age Card.

What do I do if I lose my Age Card or it is stolen?:
If your card is lost or stolen you should report the loss to your nearest Garda Station.

How do I replace my lost/stolen Age Card?:
The application process for a repeat card is the same as for a new card.
However, you will be required to make a report on the loss or theft of your original card when presenting your application for authentication at your local Garda Station. The processing Garda will record this on the Garda Pulse System and then forward your application to the Printers. The Printers will then reissue your Age Card.

Do I have to pay again?:
Yes, the €10 fee will apply to the repeat application.

I have an old style Age Card, is it still valid?:
Yes, there is no expiry date on your old card. However, the last old style “black” age card ceased production in March 2007 and many establishments no longer accept it.

Is there an expiry date on my Age Card?:
No there is no expiry date on your Age Card.

Is there an expiry date on my Application Form?:
Yes, if you do not bring your Application Form to be authenticated at a Garda Station within three months of your date of online application the form will no longer be valid and will not be processed.

In this instance you will be required to reapply online and pay an additional €10 fee.

Who can I contact if I don’t receive my Application Form or my Age Card?:
Go to the Contact Us tab on www.agecard.ie, fill in your own details and the details of your query. This will go directly to the Printers who will be able to deal with your query.

I ordered my Age Card under the old system, does the changeover to the new system affect my application?:
If you ordered under the old offline system you should receive your card by mid January at the latest.

The old ordering system was terminated on the 17th December. The current Printers will process all applications they have received from District Offices up to and including 31st December 2010. These cards will be posted directly to the Applicants and all should be processed by mid January 2011.

What happens if I have an old Application form – can I still use it?:
NO, the old blue Application Forms have been withdrawn from Garda Stations with effect from Friday 10th December 2010 and these forms are no longer accepted at Garda Stations. The form can no longer be processed under the new system and you will be referred to www.agecard.ie to progress your application.
