The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat.

It provides subsidies to eligible, non-domestic renewable heat generators and producers of biomethane based in the UK and Northern Ireland, payable for the life of the installation or up to a maximum of 20 years. The Northern Ireland RHI (NIRHI) policy and tariff rates are set by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI). We administer this scheme on behalf of DETI.

Carbon Trust Loans and Northern Ireland RHI:
DETI are conducting a review which concerns whether an installation that has availed of a Carbon Trust Loan is eligible to receive the Northern Ireland RHI. Interested stakeholders are invited to read further details at DETI website.

We will update our website in due course based on the results of this review. Stakeholders may also contact us on 0845 200 2122 or by email to be noted as an interested party.

What are the eligibility criteria?:
Initially, the scheme is open to non-domestic renewable heat installations and the production of biomethane for injection in the national gas grid.

The following renewable heat technologies will be supported initially:
Solid biomass and solid biomass contained in municipal waste (including CHP) up to and not including 1MW. Ground and water source heat pumps (any capacity) Geothermal, including CHP (any capacity) Solar thermal (at capacities of less than 200 kWth) Biogas combustion (except from landfill gas but including CHP; at capacities of less than 200kWth) Biomethane injection

There are other criteria which must be met and which appear in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s (DETI’s) Northern Ireland Renewable Heat Guidance volumes on their website.

These include:
Demonstrating that the heat is being used for an eligible purpose The use of appropriate metering arrangements Proof that grants have not been received for certain purposes

How to apply:
You can apply online using the NIRHI Register. To use the NIRHI Register you will need to create a user account for which you must be the Authorised Signatory for your organisation, meaning you are its owner or authorised representative. Future expansion of the scheme:
DETI intends to introduce a second phase of the NIRHI scheme. In phase two, DETI has stated that in addition to expanding eligibility criteria for the non – domestic scheme it intends to introduce support for domestic generators.
