Free Surname Search:
The free surname search on our homepage gives you the opportunity to test how many results you might find with the surname of your choice, across the different record types. Simply type in the surname and choose the time period; the default dates will return results from the entire database.

On the free search results page, you will be told how many instances of the chosen surname are found within each different set of records.

You may view any results from the wills & testaments index. However, to see other index results and to view images of any of the records, including wills & testaments, you need to be a registered user.

Registration & Login:
Only registered users can access the full search facilities and official records.

Note: If you had an account with ScottishDocuments.com and have already opted in to this combined site then you will be able to login without re-registering. If not, then you will have to register as a new user of this site.

To Register:
** Click on the Register button on the Home page or click here to go directly to the Registration page.
** Enter your Account details. Ensure that you complete the required fields, marked with an asterisk (*). The number to the right of each field indicates how many characters are allowed in that field, and the number will decrement as you type.
** Choose a Username. The Username field will automatically populate with your email address; if you’d like a different username, simply type any string of at least 6 characters instead of your email address.
** Click on “Register” to submit your details. You will shortly receive an email to the email address you registered with. This email will contain a randomly generated password. Note: The password will be sent from unmanned@scotlandspeople.gov.uk Please make sure this address is not blocked by your email/spam filters, white lists etc. If you wish to change your password to one that you can remember, you may do so after logging into your account and going to the “My Details” section. Remember to click “Update details” after making the change.
** If your choice of username is already in use, you will receive a message to that effect; please choose a different username.
** Once you login you can search the index to wills & testaments free of charge, or you may buy credits to begin searching the statutory, old parish register and census indexes. You can do this by either clicking the “Need MORE?” link at the top right hand corner of the screen or by choosing a search. For further information on how to pay see Payment Process

Please note:
Two separate methods of payment are employed on this site: Access to statutory, old parish register, census records, valuation rolls and wills & testaments is based on a system of credits, purchased through a card transaction or a Voucher, but payment for images of coats of arms is done directly through a card transaction. Access to the wills & testaments index and the coats of arms index is free.
** When you first register, you will automatically be taken to a New User page where you can begin the purchase process. If you are already a registered user, simply log in and then select “Buy more credits” from the top right hand corner of the screen.
** Payment can be made through credit or debit card, and all card transactions are processed through our secure payment gateway. It accepts most major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, Visa Debit, Switch, Solo, Delta and JCB. Please note that your card details are never stored on our servers – this is done by our payment gateway provider.
** Select the number of credits you would like to purchase from the drop-down menu, then click on the PURCHASE button. You will be taken to the credit purchasing page.
** Follow the payment instructions. When you make payment please ensure that you allow enough time for the transaction to finalise. Once payment is authorised, your credits will be allocated and your one year session of access will begin.

Note:
Payments made by credit or debit card will appear on your statement as ScotlandsPeople.

Very occasionally, the payment gateway servers will be offline for maintenance. If this occurs, outage information will be displayed in the Latest Update & News section on the front page of this site.

Refunds:
Page credit purchases cannot be refunded, but they may be extended in special cases.
