** There are several reasons why someone wants to change their name or name or their child’s name. Regardless of the reason, the process is the same.

Who can change the name?
A citizen of Seychelles by birth or naturalization and has resided in Seychelles for three years may apply in writing to the Chief Officer of the Civil Status for permission to make change(s) or addition(s) of his name, surname or family name.

Where do I need to go?
You need to go to the Civil Status office in Independence house on ground floor.

What documents do I require?
** Birth certificate,
** Citizenship regitration / naturalization certificate.

How much does it cost?
The fee for the application is SR500/- and the publications in the gazette is around SR300/-.

What I should know about changing my name?
** The application will be published three times in the Official Gazette for four months. The application will be approved if no objection has been lodged or on good and sufficient ground in support of the application.

** Once you are married, automatically your husband’s surname will be your new surname. You need not go to Civil Status office to change your surname.

** If you happen to be divorced and you wish to be known by your maiden name, then you need to certify with the Civil Status office as to that you are divorced. Then you can proceed to get your new National Identity card.

Acquisition of Seychelles Citizenship :
** The page explains the process of how to acquire a Seychelles citizenship, registration in special circumstances, naturalisation, parental descent and the official citizenship examination.

Documents to be submitted :
• Your birth certificate;
• Birth certificates of your parent/grandparent who was born in Seychelles;
• Copy of passport’s bio-data page;
• One passport size photograph;
• Police character certificate which should not be more than six months old.**

Notes And Instructions :
You did not automatically become a citizen of Seychelles and – (See below *)
i) any of your parent or grandparent was born in Seychelles;

ii) you have not been sentenced to a term of imprisonment exceeding1 year or more for an offence punishable under any laws of Seychelles;
iii) you have obtain at least 80% marks in 1 of the 3 national languages in the citizenship qualifying examination;

Your application must be signed by two sponsors who should be either:
** A Judge, a Magistrate, a Senior Government official (who should be the Principal Secretary of a Government Ministry or the Director General in a Ministry or Department), a Head teacher of a school, an Ambassador or High Commissioner of Seychelles who is a Seychelles citizen by birth, Medical Practitioner.

** You will also be required to advertise on two consecutive days in a daily local newspaper of wide circulation and once in the Official Gazette, your intension to apply for citizenship of Seychelles. Copies of the advertisements are to be attached to your application.
