Death Registration :

Declaration of Deaths occuring in Mauritius:
A death registration may be made at the civil status office of the locality within the district where the death occurred or where the deceased last resided.

After registration a permit is issued authorizing burial/cremation.
One declarant is required at time of registration.

Declaration of Deaths occuring outside Mauritius:
Where a person has died outside Mauritius and the body is brought to Mauritius for disposal, an officer may, on production to him of a certificate from a Health Inspector that there is no objection to the disposal, issue a permit authorizing the disposal.

Death on Mauritian ship or aircraft:
If a death occur on board any ship or aircraft the Master of the ship or aircraft shall draw up a declaration of the death and on the arrival of the ship or aircraft in Mauritius he shall deliver the declaration to the Director who shall transmit it to the Registrar of Civil Status for registration in the appropriate register.

Documents to be produced:
** Medical certificate of the cause of death together with the deceased person’s
** Birth/marriage certificate
** National Identity Card.

Emergency:
If the services of a civil status officer is required after 12.00 a.m for the registration of a death due to emergency circumstances, members of the public should contact the Police Station of the locality for further information.

Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays:
On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays ,the following civil status offices are opened from 9.00 a.m to noon for death registrations.

Services :
The Civil Status Division is responsible for the registration of births, deaths and marriages and other matters relating to the civil status of persons in Mauritius and for the issue of civil status certificates.
Since 01 November 2001, a Computerized Registration System is operational on a pilot basis.
Laser-printed certificates of birth, death and marriage are issued on A4 format in English and French language at computerized offices.

Civil Status Certificates :
Extracts of civil status certificates may be applied for either at the Central Civil Status Office in Port Louis or at the Civil Status Office where the event was registered.

Any person may on production of a stamp to the value of Rs25 obtain a copy of the entry relating to :
** the declaration of his birth;

the declaration of the birth of his spouse or of any of his ascendants or descendants -the registration of :-
** his marriage
** a previous marriage of his spouse;

** the marriage of any of his ascendants or descendants;
** any declaration of death other than the first manuscript
** The first issue of a birth, death and marriage certificates is free of charge.

** Such certificates may be obtained instantly at computerized offices.
** Laser-printed certificates of birth are delivered on the same day or after a minimum period of 3 days
** at the Central Civil Status Office and at any computerised office.
** No fee is payable for the issue of civil status certificates.

Application for Civil Status documents from abroad :
Subject to providing proof of identity, persons residing abroad may apply for civil status certificates.
To enable searches to be carried out, an indicative date and place of the birth/death /marriage should be given on application.

2) Foreign applicants can also authorize a person living in Mauritius to collect the requested document.
3) However, the names and surname of the proxy will have to be communicated to this office in advance.
