Enrolment:
Accepted to study at the University of Helsinki? On this page we explain how you enrol as a new student.

Exchange students:
Exchange students are automatically enrolled at the University of Helsinki once they have been accepted to study at UH.

For exchange students the Student Union fee is voluntary, but it is highly recommendable that you register for the Student Union membership. By paying the Student Union fee, you have access to the student health care services (this does not apply to doctoral students), you can order a student card (the cost is 15.10 euro), you get a discount on meals at the Unicafe student cafeterias, etc.

Visiting students:
You will receive the necessary forms from your faculty. Please follow the instructions issued by your faculty. It is extremely important that you accomplish the enrolment procedure at the university as soon as possible, because no official certification of your studies can be issued before that.

Degree students:
As a new degree students you have to first accept the place of study and submit enrolment documents. If your acceptance in conditional, you are also required to submit your final degree certificate to the faculty. Below you can find detailed instructions about the whole enrolment process.

Accepting a place of study (degree students):
Your faculty sends you the letter of acceptance by regular mail or email. In the letter you will receive information on accepting your place of study as well as on submitting your enrolment documents.

You must send the confirmation form of acceptance to your faculty on the date given in the acceptance letter. If you will be accepted from the waiting list the faculty will inform you of the deadline.

Your notice on accepting the place of study is binding. If you do not intend to accept the place of study, please inform the faculty of your withdrawal as soon as possible.

If you don’t accept the place of study by the deadline given in the letter of acceptance, you will lose your right to study at the University of Helsinki.

Enrolment documents (degree students):
There are documents you need to return to your faculty to complete your enrolment as a new degree student. You will receive these documents together with your acceptance letter. The required documents may vary from one faculty to another, but most faculties require:
** Student Registration Form
** Original receipt of the Student Union (HYY) fee payment (see payment instructions)

These documents must be delivered to your faculty by July 31, 2015, at 16:00 local time (GMT +2) at the latest.

The Student Union membership entitles you to several benefits. Please follow the payment instructions on the Student Union’s webpage, do not send a check or a money order to the faculty! Take a copy of the receipt for yourself – you will need it later to access a number of services at the university.

Conditional admission (degree students):
If your acceptance to the University of Helsinki has been defined as conditional, you are also required to send an officially certified copy of the final degree certificate and its official translation (in English, Finnish or Swedish) directly to your faculty by July 31, 2015, at 16:00 local time (GMT +2). If you are accepted to the Faculty of Arts, the final degree certificate must reach the Faculty by July 15, 2015.

If you fail to send the required documents by the deadline, your admission will be cancelled.

A temporary degree certificate (and its official translation in English, Finnish or Swedish) is also accepted. The documents have to be legalized in the manner requested by the University of Helsinki. Read more about how to legalize your documents and about the country-specific requirements on the How to Apply page.

Official certification of your studies:
The completion of the enrolment is crucial because no official certification of your studies can be issued by the university before that. As a degree student you will receive the official certification from the Student Registrar in regular mail or by visiting the Welcome Fair. Exchange and visiting students get the certification at the Welcome Fair. It is also possible to get the certification by visiting the university’s Student Services.

The official certification of your studies is mandatory when you are applying for a permanent address in Helsinki. All students, whose degree studies last at least for two years, can be registered as permanent residents of the municipality.

Changing address:
When you enrol, you give your current address. If you move to a new address later on, you should make a notice of moving. This can be made by email studentinfo AT helsinki.fi or at the Student Services. When you have your username and password for the UH networks, you can do it yourself on WebOodi database system.
