Proof of Citizenship/ Immigration Status :

Canadian citizen:
As an adult, you must submit proof of citizenship unless you qualify to renew a passport.

For child applications, you must submit proof of citizenship and proof of parentage.

Provide original documents; photocopies are not accepted.

If you were born in Canada, provide one (1) of the following:
** Birth certificate issued by the province or territory where you were born (some exceptions apply)
** For children, a detailed (long-form) birth certificate that indicates the name(s) of the parent(s) will also count as proof of parentage.
** Certificate of citizenship issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada

If born outside of Canada, provide one (1) of the following issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada:
** Certificate of citizenship
** Certificate of naturalization
** Certificate of retention of Canadian citizenship
** Certificate of registration of birth abroad
** For children, the child’s foreign birth certificate that indicates the name(s) of the parent(s) should also be included as proof of parentage.

Please indicate in section 4 of the application form if you acquired citizenship of another country before January 1, 1947.

Documents in a language other than English or French must be translated into English or French by a certified translator.

Non-Canadian in Canada
Provide the original of one (1) of the following valid documents (photocopies are not accepted):
** Permanent Resident Card
** Protected Person Status Document
** Temporary Resident Permit
** Notice of Decision (NOD) from the Immigration and Refugee Board
** Citizenship and Immigration Canada Verification of Status (VOS) document

The Record of Landing (IMM 1000) is not accepted as proof of immigration status in Canada.

The Notice of Decision and Verification of Status must confirm protected person status.

Canadian birth certificates :
** Contact the vital statistics office in the province or territory where you were born to ask for a birth certificate.

Certain provinces have different documents that we also accept as proof of Canadian citizenship, such as :
British Columbia: Documentary Evidence of Citizenship (DEC) includes the Certified True Copy of a Registration Document and Registration of Live Birth, which are issued :
** by the province of British Columbia
** in cases where the name of the bearer is more than 30 characters for the surname or 30 characters for the given names

New Brunswick : a certified extract of a registration document is issued:
** by the Province of New Brunswick
** in cases where the name of the bearer is more than 39 characters for the surname(s) and 30 characters for the given name(s)

Northwest Territories: a Registration of Birth, Certificate of Registration of Birth, or Registration of Live Birth is issued:
** by the Northwest Territories
** in cases where the surname(s) and given name(s) of the bearer is more than a total of 58 characters

Nova Scotia: a certified photocopy of Live Birth Registration is issued:
** by the Province of Nova Scotia
** in cases where the name of the bearer is more than 30 characters for the surname(s) and 38 characters for the given name(s)

Ontario: a certified copy of birth registration issued by the Province of Ontario

Quebec: a birth certificate or a copy of an act of birth issued after January 1, 1994, by the Directeur de l’état civil of Quebec

How to renew your passport :
The forms you complete differ depending on where you are.
Those living in Bermuda, American Samoa, the Midway Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands should select the United States, as the same application steps apply to these countries
