Hazard Perception Test For P1 Licence Holders :

The hazard perception test measures how quickly you can identify and respond to dangerous driving situations.

You will need your driver licence number to log in the hazard perception Test

It is an online test—you can’t take the test at a customer service centre.

You must pass the hazard perception test before you can upgrade to a P2 provisional licence or an open licence :
** If you were 23 or younger when you received your P1 licence, you will get a P2 licence.
** If you were 24 or older when you received your P1 licence, you will get an open licence.

You can do the test as many times as you need until you pass the test, however you can only do the test once a day. You only need to pay for the test once—when you pass.

Who can take the hazard perception test :
** You can take the hazard perception test after you have held your P1 licence for at least 1 year. The 1 year period does not have to be continuous, but does not include any time that your P1 licence was expired, suspended, or cancelled.
** If your P1 licence is currently suspended or cancelled you will need to wait until your licence is current again before you can take the test. You can only take the test if your P1 licence is current.

How to prepare for the test :
** The best way to improve your hazard perception skills and pass the test is by getting plenty of driving experience. Good hazard perception is based on your ability to read the road ahead and look out for hazards that may turn into a traffic conflict.
** A traffic hazard or conflict is a situation where your vehicle is on course to hit another road user, such as a pedestrian, cyclist, bus, truck, motorcycle or another car. If your vehicle needs to slow down or change course to prevent a crash, then there is a traffic conflict.
** One way to improve your hazard perception skills when you are driving is by looking beyond the vehicle directly in front of you and noticing potential hazards like pedestrians or slowing or turning vehicles. The key to good hazard perception is being able to identify early when a potential hazard conflict is likely to occur.

Take the hazard perception test :

** Before you start, make sure you have a laptop or desktop computer with a mouse and a broadband internet connection (a minimum download speed of 256kpbs is recommended). If you do not have a broadband internet connection at home, you can take the test at a public library or internet café or kiosk. If you live on the Cape York Peninsula, visit the Cape York Digital Network website to find out where you can get internet access.
** Your laptop or desktop computer also needs to have Adobe Flash Player 9.0.115 (or higher) installed. You will be prompted to download the Flash Player if it isn’t installed already.
** The test is not available on tablets or smartphones.
** The test consists of videos of traffic scenes. You need to identify traffic hazards using your mouse. Your reaction time between spotting a traffic hazard and clicking on it with your mouse determines your score.
** Each video contains 1 traffic hazard—you need to predict the traffic hazard or conflict and respond to it by clicking on the other road user involved in the traffic conflict as quickly as possible. You should see a yellow circle appear when you click on the other road user. This means that your click has been recorded. Your click is timed and will be used to determine whether you pass the hazard perception test.
** Before you take the test, you will watch an instructional video, be given an exercise to test your mouse skills and a practice test.

Taking the test online : https://www.service.transport.qld.go…HptWelcome.jsp

The hazard perception test takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, but you should allow yourself up to 45 minutes to :
** watch the instruction video
** complete the mouse skills exercise
** complete the practice test
** read and accept the terms and conditions
** download the test
** take the test and receive feedback on your result
** pay for the test online, if you choose this option.

If you do not pass the test, your hazard perception test feedback report will tell you why.

You can try again the next day-remember you only pay for the test once you have passed it.

After you have passed the test:
When you pass the test, you will be given options to pay the test fee. You can pay this fee online using a debit or credit card (MasterCard or Visa). Payments made by credit card will incur a credit card surcharge.

From 1 January 2014, if you pass and pay for the test online you may be able to have your P1 licence automatically upgraded to a P2 or open licence and a new licence sent to you.

Your licence can not be automatically upgraded if :
** you have a laminate licence
** your licence is expired or will expire within 6 weeks from the date you pay your test fee
** you have not had a digital image and digitised signature taken in the last 9 years

If you want to pay cash, you will need to do this at a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre or, if you live in a rural area, a QGAP office or licence-issuing police station. You must pay for your hazard perception test before you can upgrade your P1 licence to a P2 licence or open licence.

The earliest you can upgrade your P1 licence is the day after you have held your P1 licence for 1 year (not including any periods of licence suspension or disqualification).
