Australian Citizenship Practice Test

The citizenship test consists of 20 questions drawn at random from a pool of questions. To pass the test, you must answer 75 per cent, or 15 out of 20 questions, correctly.Your application fee covers the cost of the citizenship test.

You will need to know and understand the information in the testable section of the Australian citizenship test resource book ‘Australian Citizenship : Our Common Bond’ to answer the questions in the citizenship test.

There is no extra charge for sitting the test more than once.

In preparation for the citizenship test, try the practice test questions below. There are different questions in each group.

Citizenship :
Before 26 January 1949, the status of Australian citizen did not exist, and people born in Australia were British subjects.

The legal concept of Australian citizen was created on 26 January 1949 with the enactment of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948, now known as the Australian Citizenship Act 2007. On that date, people born in Australia became Australian citizens automatically, whether they were in Australia or outside Australia.

Am I eligible?
The Australian Government is strengthening the requirements to become an Australian citizen. See the media release available at Minister for Immigration and Border Protection website.

This includes :
** Increasing the general residence requirement, which means an applicant for Australian citizenship will need to demonstrate a minimum of four years permanent residence immediately prior to their application for citizenship

** Introducing an English language test, which means applicants will need to demonstrate competent English language listening, speaking, reading and writing skills before applying for citizenship by conferral

** Strengthening the Australian Values Statement to include reference to allegiance to Australia and require applicants to make an undertaking to integrate into and contribute to the Australian community
