What is Apostille and when do I need it?
Apostille is a certificate which is issued for public documents according the requirements of Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (The Hague Convention for Apostille). It certifies ONLY the authenticity of signature, the capacity of the person who signed it and if needed the authenticity of stamp/seal, affixed on the document. The Certificate DOES NOT certify the contents of the document for which it has been issued.
Apostille certification is necessary in case that public documents shall be presented in foreign country. The Apostille Convention shall not be applied for documents issued by the diplomatic or consular offices and also excludes of its scope definite administrative measures, related to trade or customs operations.
Is the Apostille certification of documents required for all countries?
For the countries by which Republic of Bulgaria has signed bilateral legal assistance treaties, in which are contained texts for exemption of documents by legalization and other certifications, the documents issued by the foreign country shall have the respective details according the bilateral agreements. The document so issued does not need Apostille certification but only needs translation on foreign language and attestation of translator`s signature by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The list of the countries by which Republic of Bulgaria has effective legal assistance treaties you may find on the Internet site of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Section „General information. Regulatory documents and forms for certifications and legalizations“
What is the validity period of Apostille?
It is without fixed term and continues its validity, while there exists the possibility to be checked and remains attached at the public document.
For which countries is the Apostille intended?

A complete and update list of these countries and their competent authorities which have the right to issue Apostille, you may find in „Apostille“Section on the web-site of the Hague Convention.
