Special Allowance For Blind Persons :

Beneficiaries :
** Persons whose visual acuity is equal or less than 6/60 in both eyes, even with correction lenses.
** Persons who attended the School for the Blind until 1990.

Allowance/Provision:
€316, 37 per month since 1/1/2012 (varies according to the wage indexation each year

Certificates/ Documents:
The application must be accompanied by the following certificates / documents:
1. (a) For Cypriot citizens:
Copy of the identity card of the applicant,

(b) For European citizens:
A verified copy of their Temporary Residence Permit / Immigration Permit from the Civil Registry and Migration Department

2. Original certificate from an ophthalmologist in which the precise acuity of vision for each eye will be shown.

3. Certificate of Attendance at the School for the Blind (for those who have attended the School until the year 1990).

General Information:
1. The Special Allowance for the Blind is provided according to the Provision of Special Allowance to the Blind Law of 2011.

2. «Blind» is considered to be any Cypriot or European citizen, who lives permanently in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and whose visual acuity in both of both eyes is such that even in the most functional eye it does not exceed the percentage of 6/60, furthermore the person who has attended the School for the Blind until the year 1990 even though his/her visual acuity in the most functional eyes exceeds the percentage of 6/60.

3. Every blind person is entitled to an allowance every year (up to €3.675,48 for 2011), that is paid in 12 monthly doses. The amount of the special allowance is adjusted from 1 January each year depending on the consumer price indexing.

4. All the applicants for the Special Allowance for the Blind will be referred to a special multidisciplinary committee, whose decision will determine the provision of the special allowance. Persons that will be invited and not present at the multidisciplinary committee will not be granted the special allowance.

5. A prerequisite for the payment of special allowance is an application on the prescribed forms of the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.

Submission Of Applications:
(a) The completed applications could be delivered to the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (67 Archbishop Makarios III street, Latsia)

(b) The completed applications could be sent by post to the following address : Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, 1430 Nicosia or to the P.O Box 12833, 2253 Latsia

About Us :
The Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities has been established as from 1.1.2009, according to the Ministers’ Council Decision n. 66.763 dated 6.2.2008, as a new Department of the Ministry and Social Insurance.

The Department operated, at the beginning, with seconded and interchangeable staff since its permanent posts were not filled.
