Motor Vehicle Registration :

Motor vehicles are used by many and unspecified persons on public roads and they are given social recognition only after been inspected and registered.

Motor vehicles are also subject to deterioration and wear of both the structure and equipment and sometimes their shapes and modified.

The registration of motor vehicles in Tanzania Mainland is governed by :
** The Road Traffic Act No. 30 of 1973
** Motor Vehicles (Tax on Registration and Transfer) Act 1972
** Traffic (Foreign Vehicles) Rules 1973
** Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles Registration) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001

Registration procedure :
The registration requires a person to be 18 years and above in order to be registered owner of a motor vehicle, and 14 years and above to be registered as motorcycle owner. Furthermore the registration is only for sound mind persons.

Motor vehicle registration procedure :
The following documents must be submitted to the TRA office :
Application for motor vehicle registration form (MV 10) properly filled by the applicant

Customs declaration :
** Tanzania Single Administrative Document (TANSAD) and release order
** Bank Pay in Slip to prove duty paid.
** A copy of your TIN certificate.
** Cancellation certificate or registration card (used vehicles)
** Interpol letter (if the vehicle is imported from a SADC member country)
** Tax invoice (if vehicle is purchased from local car dealer)

Application for motor vehicle registration :
Every person owning a motor vehicle shall make an application in form MV 10 for the registration of such motor vehicle, except for the following:
** Motor vehicles owned by the Government,
** Tanzania Peoples Defense Forces,
** International organizations,
** Diplomatic or consular offices

Lost motor vehicle registration cards :
In case of lost motor vehicle registration card, a person must report to police who will inspect the motor vehicle and provide loss report. Then will be submitted to TRA with payment of TSHS 10,000 whereby the duplicate copy of registration card will be issued.

Registration fee :
** Motor vehicle -TSHS 150,000
** Motor cycle-TSHS 45,000
** Personalized registration number renewable after every three years-TSHS 5,000,000

  1. I want to change the Registration number of Car from a Diplomatic Car with a CD number plate to a private Car. Let me know the procedures, the forms required and the fees if any.

  2. My car was stolen from Kenya last year and sold to Tanzania. Is there any way you can assist me to recover my car using engine number,chassis number?
