Paying an Application Maintenance or Patent Renewal Fee.

Annual fee payments are required from the fourth anniversary of the filing of your complete specification.
** If your patent has not been granted you are required to pay an annual maintenance fee.
** If you patent has been granted you will need to pay an annual renewal fee.

You can pay your fee up to three months before the due date. If a fee is paid after the due date, a late fee will automatically be added to you payment.

Payment must be made within six months of the fee due date to keep your application pending or patent in force. If you are outside of this six month deadline, please refer to our information about the restoration process.

Renewal payments can only be submitted for patents that have been granted and have not yet lapsed. Payment is made through our online maintenance and renewal service. Watch out for Unsolicited IP services asking you to pay money.

Renewal Fees

Renewal fees can be paid on granted patents or lapsed patents that have been approved for restoration. The renewal payment must be made within six months of the renewal deadline or the patent will lapse.

For restoration cases, our system will automatically calculate the prescribed renewal payment from the original renewal deadline to the present. This payment must be made within one month of the advice that the patent restoration has been approved.

Maintenance Fees

Maintenance fees can be paid on patent applications, or on lapsed applications that have been approved for restoration. If the application maintenance fee is not paid within six months of the due date the application will be abandoned.

The maintenance fee(s) for an application following restoration must be paid within one month of the advice that the restoration has been approved.

Note :
The one month deadline for paying fees on approved restoration cases cannot be extended.
Choose one of the following to get started :
** If you are a registered user of our website, complete the logon process and then select Pay Patent Maintenance/Renewal Fee from the patent menu on the left hand side. If you are already logged in, go straight to the renew page.

** If you are a casual user and do not use the site frequently, it is not necessary for you to become a registered user to renew your patent. Go directly to Patent Renewals or Select Renew under Patents on the Manage IP page.

Making a Renewal Payment

If you are not logged in you will need to fill in your name and email address. Use the search facility to find the patents you wish to renew, select them from the search results, and press Select.

Review the selected cases on screen and press Submit. The payment details and options will display. If you are logged in and have a direct debit facility loaded to your account you can choose the Direct Debit option for payment.

Otherwise you will need to pay by credit card or internet banking. Include your email address to receive an invoice confirming payment of the renewal fee.
