Which Type you Can Get

There are 2 types of ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance :
** ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance (Group 1), and
** ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance (Group 2)
You can only get one type of ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance for a single period. This means you can’t get Group 1 and Group 2 at the same time.

Group 1

Helps with the cost of school fees for parents and guardians getting ABSTUDY Schooling A for their child.

Who Can Get it

We pay School Fees Allowance (Group 1) if you’re getting ABSTUDY Schooling A and you or your partner meet one of the following condition :
** are getting an income support payment
** are getting Farm Household Allowance
** are getting ABSTUDY Living Allowance, or
** have a current Health Care Card or Low Income Health Care Card

If you or your partner don’t meet the criteria above, you can still get School Fees Allowance (Group 1) for your child if they’re in state care, and :
** under the minimum school leaving age for their State or Territory, and
** can’t get a higher rate of ABSTUDY

Or, you can get School Fees Allowance (Group 1) for your child if they’re an orphan, their parents can’t take care of them, or it’s unreasonable for them to live at home but they’re not considered independent because of their age.

How We Pay the Allowance

We normally pay School Fees Allowance to the school unless you choose to pay the fees yourself. We pay it when your child starts school. If you choose to pay the fees yourself, we pay School Fees Allowance to you after you’ve given us proof of payment.

What happens When Changes to Study

If we paid School Fees Allowance (Group 1) but your child didn’t end up studying, the money must be paid back to us by :
** the school, if we paid School Fees Allowance to the school, or
** you, if we paid School Fees Allowance to you

If your child started studying and then stopped, you don’t need to pay us back. If your child changed schools within the same year, we won’t pay a second School Fees Allowance (Group 1) for the new school.

Some education departments let schools transfer unused School Fees Allowance. This is a voluntary agreement between the schools and you’ll need to discuss this with the school.

Group 2

Helps with the cost of school fees for :
** students getting ABSTUDY Schooling B, or
** parents and guardians getting ABSTUDY Schooling A for their child who goes to a local non-government school

Who Can Get it?

We pay School Fees Allowance (Group 2) if you’re a student, parent or guardian and meet one of the following criteria.

If you’re a student :
You can get School Fees Allowance (Group 2) if you’re getting ABSTUDY Schooling B while studying at a secondary school and you’re :
** living away from home and getting a higher rate of ABSTUDY
** living at home and going to a non-government school because travel time or access makes it hard to get to your closest government school

** living at home and going to a non-government school because your local government school has a limited program or facilities
** in state care, your carer doesn’t get a regular foster care allowance and you meet one of the criteria for a higher rate of ABSTUDY

** considered independent for ABSTUDY because you’re an orphan
** considered independent for ABSTUDY because your parents can’t take care of you

** considered independent for ABSTUDY because it’s unreasonable to live at home, or
** considered independent for ABSTUDY for another reason and you meet one of the criteria for a higher rate of ABSTUDY.
