MOE Tamil Language Teacher Training Scheme

The 3-year Tamil Language Teacher Training Scheme (TL TTS) is designed for GCE ‘O’ Level holders who wish to become Tamil Language (TL) teachers in MOE Kindergartens.

This programme comprises a 3-year diploma course at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). Students who complete the 3-year TL TTS programme will graduate with a Diploma in Tamil Studies with Early Education (Dip in TSE) from NP and will be deployed to teach TL at an MOE Kindergarten (MK).

In Year 3 of study at NP, interested students may also choose to apply for TL (Primary) teaching if they meet MOE’s requirements.

Successful applicants will proceed to complete a 1-year Diploma in Education course at the National Institute of Education (NIE) and be deployed to Primary Schools as TL teachers.

Admission Criteria

** At least C6 for ‘O’ Level English Language as a First Language;
** At least B4 for Higher Tamil Language or A2 for Tamil Language at ‘O’ level
** At least passes in 3 other subjects (excluding CCA)
** Sat for Mathematics (Elementary/Additional) in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations

Course Structure

Year 1 to 3 of the course will be held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). (Optional) In Year 3 of study, interested candidates who apply for TL (Primary) teaching and meet MOE’s requirements will proceed with their Year 4 of study at the National Institute of Education (NIE).

Course Details

The core modules for the first year aim to provide students with a strong foundation in Tamil language, culture and heritage and to hone their language proficiency in Tamil and English Language.

In Years 2 & 3, besides continued training to enhance their knowledge of the Tamil Language, students will also get to learn more about child development to aid them in lesson design and delivery for young children.

In addition, they will get to broaden their perspectives as they embark on a cultural immersion programme locally or overseas to visit cultural and heritage sites.

Students may also choose to apply for the Global Education Trip (GeT) programme to attend workshops and observe best practices in early childhood education overseas.

A three-month internship with a preschool, where students will teach Tamil Language and literacy to young children, is also incorporated into the course for students to put what they have learnt into practice.

(Optional) During their 3rd year of study at NP, interested students may also choose apply to MOE to be a primary school Tamil Language teacher. If they meet MOE’s criteria, they will proceed to attend lessons at NIE in Year 4 and undergo a teaching practicum coordinated by NIE.

Teaching Level

Candidates who successfully complete the Diploma in Tamil Language Studies with Early Education course under the 3-year Tamil Language Teacher Training Scheme will be deployed to teach Tamil Language at an MOE Kindergarten upon the completion of their studies at NP.

Teaching Bond

Tuition fees for the 3-year diploma course are fully paid by the Ministry of Education. While undergoing training at NP during the first 3 years, candidates will receive a monthly bursary of $800.

Upon completion of their NP course, they will serve a 3-year bond, teaching Tamil Language at our MOE Kindergartens.

A MOE-sponsored student who embarks on the course under the Tamil Language Teacher Training Scheme but fails to graduate or whose service is terminated before fully discharging the teaching bond will have to pay liquidated damages to the Ministry.

(Optional) Those who applied for and are selected for NIE training will receive a monthly salary (inclusive of CPF and year-end bonus) during their 4th year of study at NIE.

Tuition fees for all trainee teachers are fully paid by the Ministry of Education. Upon the completion of their NIE training, they will serve a 5-year teaching bond, teaching Tamil Language at our primary schools.

A trainee teacher who embarks on the training but fails to graduate from NIE or whose service is terminated before fully discharging the teaching bond will have to pay liquidated damages to the Ministry.
