A Household Check exercise was conducted in May – Jun 2015 to allow households to verify/update their household information to ensure that they receive the correct MediShield Life Premium Subsidies.

Even if households did not participate in the Household Check exercise, the Government will compute the MediShield Life Premium Subsidies based on existing information in the Government records.

Information on your MediShield Life premium and applicable subsidies will be sent in writing to the payer of your premium about 1 month before your policy renewal date by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board or your Integrated Shield Plan (IP) insurer (if you are insured under an IP).

To view or update the household information used to compute your Premium Subsidies, log in to the Household Check e-Service.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for MediShield Life Premium Subsidies for Lower- to Middle-Income Households
** Have a household monthly income per person of $2,600 or less per month; and
** Annual Value of residence is $21,000 or less; and
** Individuals who own multiple properties will not be eligible.

Why use household monthly income per person?
MediShield Life Premium Subsidies for lower-and middle-income households is based on the monthly income per person in each household. This helps to ensure that bigger households remain eligible for this subsidy, even if their total household income appears to be high.

For instance, a family with five members living together and with a total household income of $13,000 is eligible for Premium Subsidies for lower- and middle-income families.

This is because their household monthly income per person is $2,600, which falls within the eligibility criteria ($2,600).

* Household members refer to family members (i.e. those related by blood, marriage and/or legal adoption) living together at the same residential address. Domestic helpers, tenants, and friends are not considered as household members.

MediShield Life

MediShield Life replaced MediShield from 1 Nov 2015, and will offer :
** Better protection and higher payouts, so that patients pay less Medisave/cash for large hospital bills
** Protection for all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, including the very old and those who have pre-existing conditions
** Protection for life

MediShield Life is a basic health insurance plan, administered by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board, which helps to pay for large hospital bills and selected costly outpatient treatments, such as dialysis and chemotherapy for cancer.

MediShield Life coverage is sized for subsidised treatment in public hospitals. Those who choose to stay in a Class A/B1 wards or in a private hospital are also covered by MediShield Life.

However, as MediShield Life payouts are pegged at Class B2/C wards, the MediShield Life payout will make up a small proportion of the bill only. The patient may therefore need to pay more of their bill from Medisave and/or cash.

Types of Premium Subsidies

The Government will help Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents with their MediShield Life premiums through various types of subsidies. Those requiring more support will be able to receive additional assistance.

Transitional Subsidies :
** For all Singapore Citizens who face an increase in their net premiums (i.e. after taking into account various subsidies the policyholder is eligible for) for MediShield Life, regardless of their household income or the Annual Value of their home.

** In the first year, the Government will pay 90% of the net increase in MediShield Life premiums above MediShield premiums. This means that you only need to pay 10% of the net increase in your MediShield Life premium in the first year.

** The Government will cover 70%, 40% and 20% of the net premium increase in the second, third and fourth years of MediShield Life.
** Available for the first 4 years of MediShield Life.

Premium Subsidies for the lower- to middle- income :
** For lower- to middle-income families with household monthly income per person of $2,600 and below, and living in residences with an Annual Value of $21,000 and below.

** Those eligible can receive subsidies of up to 50% of their premiums. Permanent Residents will receive half the subsidy rate applicable to citizens.
