FAQ in Centralised Organ Donation :

The Department of Health (DH) has set up the Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR) to make it more convenient for prospective donors to voluntarily register their wish to donate organs after death, and for such wish to be more reliably recorded.

The Register will enable medical personnel responsible for organ donation to know upon the patients’ death about their wish to donate organs, and the bereaved family to acknowledge the deceased’s wish to rekindle lives of other people.

1. Once I am registered as an organ donor, the medical personnel will not save my life in case I am injured in an accident.
This is impossible. Saving life is the responsibility and foremost priority of every healthcare professional. They will consider collecting a patient’s organs for transplantation only when the patient is certified dead.

2. I am worried that all my organs will be taken away regardless of my wish.
You may specify in the Centralised Organ Donation Register or on the organ donation card which organ(s) or tissue(s) you wish to donate.

In addition, family member of the deceased has to sign a consent form to confirm the organ or tissue to be removed for transplant purpose.

3. I am worried about the fees and charges arising from organ donation.
Fees and charges arising from organ donation after the death of donors are not to be borne by their family.

4. After registration at the Centralised Organ Donation Register, I cannot change or withdraw my registration.
If your wish changes after registration (for example, you want to change the organs to be donated), you can visit the Centralised Organ Donation Register website to fill in and submit the relevant form. After verification, you can amend or withdraw your registration.

5. I have already registered at the Centralised Organ Donation Register and I still need to sign the organ donation card and carry it with me at all times.
As the Organ Donation Coordinators of the Hospital Authority can access your wish to donate organ from the Centralised Organ Donation Register directly, there is no need for you to carry the organ donation card.

The most important thing is to tell your family your wish to donate organs.

6. I am not sure if I have registered in the Centralised Organ Donation Register or not.
Upon receiving organ donation registrations, staff of the Department of Health will contact the registrants by telephone to verify their personal particulars.

Persons registering online with email provided will be issued an acknowledgement email upon confirmation of registration.

Those who have registered in the Register have the right of access and correction with respect to personal data as provided for in section 18 and 22 and Principle 6 of Schedule 1 of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

Please contact the Centralised Organ Donation Register System Administrator at 2961 8441, by fax at 2127 4926 or by email at codr [AT] dh.gov.hk for details.

7. I have already signed an organ donation card, so I do not need to register at the Centralised Organ Donation Register.
Signing an organ donation card is one way of expressing your wish to donate your organs.

We also encourage people who have signed an organ donation card to register at the Centralised Organ Donation Register, in order to facilitate the Organ Donation Coordinators of the Hospital Authority to learn about your wish and make arrangements accordingly.

8. I need to provide a lot of personal information when registering at the Centralised Organ Donation Register.
When registering at the Centralised Organ Donation Register, you are only required to provide your name, Hong Kong Identity Card number, phone number, email/correspondance address and the type(s) of organ you wish to donate.
