Where can I register the birth?
** You can register a birth at Birmingham Register Office, Holliday Wharf, Holliday Street, Birmingham, B1 1TJ.

Who can register the birth?
** If the parents were married at the time of the birth, then either the mother or father can register the baby.
** If they were not married, the mother must register the baby and if the father’s details are to be included, he will need to attend the registration.

What do I need to bring with me?
** When attending the Register Office parents should bring the hospital discharge papers with them.
** It may also be helpful to bring your own passports and the birth certificates of any of your previous children.

** Further helpful documents are driving licence, benefit statement or council tax bill. Where the parents are married to one another and it is available, you should bring the marriage certificate for the parents.
** Please note that you are not required to produce these documents, but if you do they can help you to ensure that your baby’s birth is registered correctly.

If English is not my first language can I bring an interpreter?
** Yes, if English is not your first language you should ask a friend or relative to go with you to register and help you to understand what is said.

How much does it cost?
** There is no charge for registering a birth and you will receive a short birth certificate, which details the name, sex, date and district of birth, but not parents details.

How much is a full birth certificate?
** Full birth certificates showing parents details cost £4.00 on the day of registration.
** Payment for certificates should be made in cash.
** If you require further certificates they cost £7.00.
** Once the register is full it is placed in the archives, and certificates will then cost £10.00 each.

Do I have to bring the baby with me when I register the birth?
** No, we do not need to see the baby but you should bring the hospital discharge papers with you.

What surname can the baby have?
** The parents can choose any surname for the baby, however the child will normally be given the surname of the mother or of the father.
** The baby’s surname should be the name the baby will be brought up in.

Can an unmarried father’s name be added to the birth certificate at a later date?
** If possible an unmarried father should attend at the time the birth is registered, however it is possible to add the name at a later date.

What if we get married after the birth is registered?
** Couples who marry after registering a birth need to register the child again as a child of the marriage, even if the fathers name is already included.
** The mother’s and child’s surnames can be changed at this point and a new birth certificate issued. See our Re Registration page.

What if I do not live in Birmingham?
** A parent can also register the birth by making a declaration in person at any convenient Register Office.
** However a birth certificate will not be issued until the details have been forwarded to Birmingham Register Office, which would mean a slight delay in receiving your birth certificate.

When should I register the birth?
** A birth should be registered within 42 days of the birth.
