Apply for a License :

Information for Applicants :
Before You Apply :
** Before you apply for a licence you should check that you will meet our licensing criteria.
** Doing so may save you time and money: you will not be granted a licence unless you meet the criteria and the licence fee is non-refundable.

Identity :
** You will need to provide documents that prove you are who you say you are.

Age :
** You must be over 18 to hold an SIA licence.

Qualifications :
** Individuals applying for a front line SIA licence must hold the relevant licence-linked qualification.

Criminality :
** If you have a criminal record, it does not necessarily mean that you will not get a licence.

We will make our decision according to :
** Whether we consider your offences relevant to our decision;
** The actual sentence or disposal given to you for the offence; and
** How recent the offences were.
** Our criminal record indicator provides a ‘no cost’ way of determining whether or not you will pass our criminality criteria.

Right to Work :
** You will not be granted a licence unless you have the right to work in the UK.
Note : UK citizens and EEA nationals have an automatic right to work in the UK).

Mental Health :
** We will take into account any recent mental health problems where you have had to be detained or been subject to other compulsory measures in the five years prior to your application.

This is what you need to do if you wish to apply for a licence :
** If you haven’t already done so, create a personal online account on our self-service website.
** Fill in and submit your application online*.
** You will be asked for certain personal information – for example, where you have lived within the last 5 years.
** We will ask you to go to a UK post office to complete your application.
** You will need to take certain documents with you (we will tell you which ones when you submit your application).

** Not all post offices offer this service – please check the post office website for details on which ones do.
** The post office staff will check and return your documents, take a digital photograph of you, take an electronic version of your signature and take payment of the application fee.
** You may need to send your documents to us as well as taking them to the post office. We will tell you if this is the case when you submit your application.

Note :
* Please contact us if you are unable to apply online; we will tell you what to do next.
** Please contact us if you are unable to complete your application at a UK post office (for example, if you live overseas). We will tell you what to do next.

How much does it cost?
** The licence application fee is £220 for a three year licence, except for front line vehicle immobiliser licences where the fee is £220 for a one year licence.
** 50% discount- Some people may need more than one licence; in such cases the second licence will be discounted by 50%.

How long will it take?
** We aim to process a minimum of 80% of all correctly completed applications within 25 working days.
** Our advisors will not provide an update on your application within this time.
** This time starts from the day your application is entered onto our system and ends on the day we make our decision.

** The clock is stopped if your application fails validation – that is, if we have to send it back to you because you have not filled it in correctly or you have not provided the required supporting documentation.

** The clock is reset when you send your application back to us.
** Complex applications (for example, applications subject to additional criminality or qualification enquiries and those requiring overseas criminality checks) may take longer than 25 working days.
** In April 2016, 86% of all applications were processed within 25 working days.

  1. I cannot renew through online before previous licence expired in 2017.

    1. Information available from the Official Website :

      Renew Your Licence :
You can’t renew a licence unless you currently hold an active licence in that sector. If your licence has expired, you will need to apply for a new licence.

We will accept licence renewals up to four months in advance of when your current licence expires. If your application for renewal is successful and is processed before your existing licence expires, you will not be disadvantaged as the new licence will expire three years after your current licence expires.

A licence renewal costs the same as a new application (£220). No additional training or qualification is required for a licence renewal unless you are renewing a door supervisor licence and you have not attained one of the current licence-linked qualifications (the ones introduced in Summer 2010).
