** The Residence Determination ImmiCard records a card holder’s claimed identity at the time of issue.

Purpose of the ImmiCard :
** ImmiCards are the commencement of identity credential to help card holders living in the community access government services which they might be entitled to and to acquire future identity credentials from the government and private sector.

** Children born in Australia are not eligible for an ImmiCard because they can obtain an Australian birth certificate.
** ImmiCards assist the card holder to prove their visa or immigration status and enrol for services they are entitled to.

** Individuals who have been issued a Visa Evidencing Card (PLO56) or a DFTTA can continue to use these documents to enrol for services.

Validating ImmiCard details :
** ImmiCards can be verified through the Document Verification Service (DVS).
** This is a secure, national, real-time online system that allows Australian government agencies and registered organisations to confirm that the ImmiCard has not been cancelled and that the details on the card match records held by immigration systems.

Checking an ImmiCard holder’s visa status :
** The ImmiCard number allows visa holders and registered Australian organisations to check visa entitlements and status information, including visa grant date, through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online system known as VEVO.

** VEVO is a free online service that gives visa holders, employers and other registered organisations easy and quick access to visa status and entitlement information 24 hours a day.’

Card expiry :
** ImmiCards are issued with a 3 year expiry date. The expiry date is not linked to the card holder’s visa.

** Expired ImmiCards can still be used after the expiry date to verify visa status through VEVO or the Document Verification Service. However, clients are able to replace their expired card online.

Document Verification Service :
** The Document Verification Service (DVS) is one of the key initiatives of the Council of Australian Governments’ National Identity Security Strategy, which is managed by the Attorney-General’s Department on behalf of all jurisdictions.

How it works :
** The DVS is a national online system that allows organisations to take information taken from a person’s identity document, with their consent, and compare this against the corresponding record of the document issuing agency.

** These checks are conducted in real time to inform decisions that rely upon the confirmation of a person’s identity. It provides a key tool for organisations that are seeking to prevent the enrolment or registration of customers, clients and even staff who may be using fraudulent identities.

Identity documents that can be verified include :
** birth, marriage and change-of-name certificates
** citizenship certificates
** driver licences
** Medicare cards
** passports
** ImmiCards
** visas.
** Videos about how the DVS works and the benefits to businesses are available from the Attorney-General’s Department YouTube channel.
