The Cayman Registry offers vessel and mortgage registration of merchant vessels, private and commercial yachts, passenger yachts and yachts under construction. Our Ports of Registration are George Town, The Creek, and Bloody Bay.
Types of Vessel Registration
Full:
An outright registration of a vessel and receipt of a Certificate of British Registry (COBR) upon the provision of all Registration Forms, Supporting Documentation, and the payment of relevant Fees.
Interim:
Available during the course of a transfer of ownership regarding a “foreign” owned and flagged ship transferring to an owner who qualifies to own a Cayman vessel and who intends to register the vessel in Cayman.
Term:
This is a temporary exception to full vessel registration. It should only be used when Cayman is not yet in possession of the Certificate of Survey for the vessel and it is difficult or impossible to do a full registration within commercial time constraints.
The Term Certificate of British Registry would be issued with a termination date, valid for up to 90 days with no extension provisions, and the client has to undertake to send the Certificate of Survey within this timeframe.
Under Construction:
Vessels that are under construction and any related mortgages may be registered.
Demise (Bareboat) Charter:
Cayman offers both Demise Charter-Out and Demise Charter-In vessel registration.

Can I submit vessel registration forms, supporting documentation and mortgage documents at locations other than Head Office?
Yes. All documents can be physically delivered or emailed to any of the Registration locations throughout the world (see relevant contact information for each location under Contact Us). Additionally, if copies are being supplied, the documentation should be supported by an Undertaking that originals will be delivered within 7 days of the date of service.
Can I have a copy of the Certificate of British Registry for a Cayman-flagged vessel?
The documentation held on a vessel’s registration file is available only to the registered owner or his/her authorised representatives. The only documentation available to third parties is the vessel’s Transcript of British Registry (see Purchase Vessel Transcripts).
Can I inspect the Shipping Register?
Yes. All information held on the Shipping Register, including mortgage details, is considered to be public record and available for viewing for a fee. Persons may inspect the Shipping Register at our Head Office located at the Government Administration Building in George Town, during normal office hours. This information is also available in the form of a Transcript of British Registry (see Purchase Vessel Transcripts).
Is the Certificate of Survey from a previous Shipping Registry acceptable for vessel registration purposes?
In most cases yes, provided that it has all of the information required by Cayman and that it has been issued by one of the six Classification Societies authorised by Cayman. In some instances, however, additional supporting information may be requested.
Can vessel and mortgage registrations be done at any time other than within normal opening hours?
Yes. By pre-arrangement, we can provide an “out-of-office” service that is available outside normal office hours, however, there is an additional fee for this service.
