Assistance from the Australian Government may be provided to aid the recovery of Australians most affected by an offshore or onshore disaster. In such cases, this website will have up-to-date public information messages, relevant free call numbers, information on Australian Government assistance packages and links to other relevant websites.

You can find information on financial assistance available for Current Disasters (since 1 July 2012) by selecting the state and territory affected on this map.

Australian Victim of Terrorism Overseas Payment:
The Australian Government announced on 9 October 2013 it will provide financial assistance to people affected by past overseas terrorism acts. The Australian Victim of Terrorism Overseas Payment (AVTOP) will also apply to future acts of terrorism that are declared by the Prime Minister.

The one-off payment of up to $75,000 will provide financial assistance for Australian residents who are harmed as a direct result of declared terrorist acts.

Payment of up to $75,000 may be shared among eligible close family members of someone that died as a direct result of a declared terrorist act.

Close family members may share a payment of up to $75,000. The principles issued under the legislation set out what share of the AVTOP payment is to be paid to close family members in the event that more than one close family member makes a claim. If the deceased person’s partner, and or children claim, they would share the payment. If no partner or children claim, parents may share the payment. If no partner, children or parents claim, siblings may share the payment.

Download the flow chart below for an explanation on financial assistance available under the AVTOP scheme.

The Social Security (Australian Victim of Terrorism Overseas Payment) Principle 2013 provides guidance for the purposes of determining the amount of an AVTOP payable to a person in relation to a declared overseas terrorist act. It is available to view and download from the ComLaw website.

Disaster arrangements :
Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements :
Responding to a natural disaster can put significant financial pressure on a state or territory government. In recognition of this, the Australian Government provides funding under the NDRRA to help them with the relief and recovery costs.

Disaster Recovery Payment :
When a major disaster has had such a significant impact on individuals and families that assistance over and above the NDRRA is needed, the Australian Government may provide the Disaster Recovery Payment which is a one-off recovery payment.

Disaster Recovery Allowance :
Major disasters can have a significant impact on people’s ability to earn an income. In such situations, the Australian Government may provide the Disaster Recovery Allowance which is a short-term income support payment.
