Vehicle Registration & Renewal :

The Department provides motor vehicle registration serv ices throughout the Territory. All vehicles (motor vehicles, trailers and motorbikes) travelling on Northern Territory roads must be registered, roadworthy, and carry Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTPI).

Fees and Charges as at 1 July 2014

The Fees and Charges listed below are for registering a privately registered light vehicle (less than 4.5 ton GVM) and do not include other fees associated with registering a motor vehicle such as Vehicle ‘roadworthy’ Inspections, Transfer of Ownership and Stamp Duty.

The Fees and Charges provided are indicative examples only and are subject to change at anytime without notice. For confirmation of exact fees and charges of registration please contact the Motor Vehicle Registry on 1300 654 628.

Pre-payment of the roadworthy inspection fee is not required; the roadworthy inspection fee will be added to your registration fees at time of payment.

Defect Clearance Inspections require pre-payment and attract the relevant roadworthy inspection fee mentioned in the table.

Transfer Interstate Vehicle Registration
You must change over your interstate vehicle registration and driver licence to Northern Territory registration and licence within three (3) months of taking up residence in the Northern Territory.

To transfer your interstate vehicle registration you will need to provide:
** a completed form R11- Application to Register a Vehicle in the NT.
** evidence of your identity and evidence of your residency in the Northern Territory. For more information about what documents are required refer to Information Bulletin G8.
** proof that you are the owner of the vehicle – this can be either a registration certificate that has been issued interstate or proof of acquisition (a receipt for purchase) of the vehicle.
** a vehicle compliance check (to confirm vehicle details eg VIN and chassis numbers).

** Compliance checks are carried out by MVR Transport Inspectors at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs. refer to Information bulletin G5 for more details about Vehicle Compliance Centre locations and operating hours.

** If you are in a remote locality or outstation you can attend your nearest Police Station.

If the vehicle is five (5) years or older you will also need to have a full vehicle inspection (roadworthy check). Roadworthy inspections can be done by an authorised inspector (most mechanics) before you attend MVR to transfer your registration or can be carried out by MVR inspectors at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

Note: Compliance checks and inspections at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine are usually available without an appointment, during business hours Monday to Friday.

Saturday inspections are available by appointment only at the Darwin Vehicle Compliance Centre. Phone 1300 654 628 to make an appointment.

You will need to obtain your passed vehicle compliance check and roadworthy inspection (where required) before attending an MVR office with your completed Form R11, Evidence of Identity and Proof of Ownership to register the vehicle.

Replace lost or stolen number plates:

Lost number plates :
Where one or both of your ordinary number plates or personalised plates were lost, you must report this to MVR within 14 days. Replacement fees for standard and personalised plates will apply including an interim set of general issue number plates. It will take 4 to 6 weeks to have your original combination including personalised number plates remade.

Stolen number plates:
If your plates are stolen you must report the theft to NT Police. They will provide you with a PROMIS card number to present at MVR and obtain a standard set of plates free of charge.

If you wish to retain your original number plate combination including personalised plate, you can order a remake set. Remake fees will apply. It will take 4 to 6 weeks to have your number plates remade.

Application and payment:
There are two ways to order replacement plates:

In person:
If you require an interim set of number plates, you can apply in person at a Motor Vehicle Registry or remote/regional agent. Cash, EFTPOS, VISA or MasterCard payments are accepted.

Phone:
If you do not need an interim set of number plates and will not be driving the vehicle until your remake plates are made and issued, place your order and make payment via the MVR call centre on 1300 654 628. VISA and MasterCard payments are accepted.
