It is a legal requirement for births in Tasmania to be registered.

If you wish to apply for a certificate, there are 3 types available.
Standard Birth Certificate:
Contains all details about a birth, including information about the parents. This document is required for most proof of identification purposes eg. passport applications and school enrolment.
Decorative Birth Certificate:
Designed for display purposes rather than identification purposes. These certificates are printed on A3 size (297 x 420mm), superior quality paper, which makes them ideal for framing. The certificates are packaged in a protective cylinder.
There are 3 designs available:
Flora:
Tasmanian native floras in shades of green, gold and brown
Teddy:
Perfect for hanging in the nursery.
Hands:
A classic design that captures the bond between parent and child.
Extract of Birth:
Contains name, sex, date and place of birth. It does not contain information about parents. It is not suitable for most proof of identification purposes.

Who can apply for a certificate?:
Historical:
Birth records are unrestricted after 100 years.
Family:
** Registered person.
** Registered parent.
** Non-parental custodian or guardian. Documentary evidence required to establish legal custody or guardianship.
** Child of registered person. Documentary evidence of relationship required i.e. birth certificate, custody or guardianship order.
** Spouse or registered partner or registered person. Documentary evidence of relationship required i.e. marriage certificate or relationship certificate.
** Grandparents. Must produce written authority of a parent or non-parental legal custodian or guardian.
** Other persons – Documentary evidence required to establish relationship. Pre-adoption birth records are open to the child with authorisation under Section 80 of the Adoption Act 1988 (form 17).
Welfare:
** Government or non-government welfare agency acting in interests of the registered person.
** Access by missing person tracing services, such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army, are treated under the Registrar’s discretionary powers.
Estate Matters:
Executor, Administrator or Public Trustee. Applicants must name the testator or intestate deceased.
Law Enforcement:
** Police (State or Federal) or National Crime Authority in pursuance of an investigation or preparation of a prosecution or pursuant to a valid warrant or court order.
** Other “law enforcement” agencies may be allowed access on approval by the Registrar.
Consular :
Consular Office or foreign legation of the country of origin of the registered person or of one of the parents.
Statutory :
Any government body having right of access under Commonwealth or Tasmanian Legislation. Restricted to formal investigation. Agreements as to how information is to be provided or for what cost may be entered into by the Registrar.
Implied Agent:
Solicitor or conveyancer acting for a person entitled to access under “Family Access” or “Access for Estate Matter”. Documentary evidence required.
Other Agent:
Any person with written authority from, or power of attorney of, a person entitled to access under “Family Access” or “Access for Estate Matter”. Documentary evidence required.
How to register a birth:
Fill in a Birth Registration Statement:
You will receive a Birth Registration Statement from the hospital or midwife.
Home births:
You can get a Birth Registration Statement from the Registry Office
Multiple births:
In the case of a multiple birth a separate statement needs to be filled in for each child
Lodge the Birth Registration Statement:
** You must lodge the Birth Registration Statement with the Registry Office within 60 days of the baby’s birth.
** Please read the general information and directions before completing the form. Your baby will go through life with the information you have stated.
** There is no fee to register a birth.
** The registration will take about 7 working days.
Who can register a baby’s birth?:
** Where possible, both parents need to sign the Birth Registration Statement and have their signatures witnessed by a person over 18 years of age.
** If only one parent has signed, he or she needs to attach a letter to the Registrar explaining why the other parent has not signed. The letter should give details of the other parent’s identity and last known address.

Same Sex Relationships:
The Relationships (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 2009 came into effect on 1st January 2010. Subject to the requirements of the Act, both women in a significant relationship may now be recognised on their child’s birth certificate. To obtain a “Same Sex Parents Birth Registration Statement” please contact BDM.
Will I receive anything?:
** The Registry does not send any acknowledgement of receiving the Birth Registration Statement.
