What happens if I don’t pay?:
If you do not pay or make a payment arrangement by the due date, the Court can take enforcement action against you to collect the outstanding amount.

The Court can:
** Make compulsory deductions from your wages, benefit or bank account.
** Seize and sell your property
** Stop you from travelling overseas
** Arrest you

If any of the above enforcement actions are started, the Court adds an enforcement fee to each fine being enforced. From 1 July 2013 this fee is $102.

In addition:
** You could have your credit affected by having unpaid fines. This means you may not be able to buy items on hire purchase, as the Ministry of Justice passes details of unpaid fines to credit reporting agencies.
** The Ministry of Justice can also suspend your driver licence for unpaid traffic fines and reparation. This means you will not be able to legally drive on New Zealand’s roads. The suspension will remain in place until your fines are paid or a payment plan is set-up.

If you are having trouble making your payments you should call us on 0800 4 FINES to discuss your situation. Don’t wait for the Court to come to you.

Infringement fines come from issuing authorities :
Local councils, the Police and other authorities can issue you infringement fees for things like :
** speeding
** illegal parking
** not registering your dog.
** If you don’t pay the infringement fee by the due date, it’s transferred to the court and becomes a fine.

** If this happens you will be sent a Notice of Fine, a court cost of $30 will be added to the original amount, and you have 28 days to pay the new fine amount to the court.
** If you pay your fine with the issuing authority after the due date, the court costs of $30 will still apply.

Court-imposed fines are given by a judge or JP in court :
** A Judge or Justice of the Peace (JP) can fine you in court if you’re found guilty of an offence like drink-driving, disorderly behaviour or theft.
** If this happens you will be sent a Notice of Fine and you have 28 days to pay the fine to the court.
