FAQ On APS

What is meant by compulsory and recommended subjects?
Compulsory subjects are specific subject combinations which are required in order for an applicant to be admitted to a specific course. These subjects form the basis for further studies and are a requirement for specific fields of study.

Recommended subjects are subjects which are not required for admission to a specific course, but are useful as they will build on your current knowledge base and enable you to understand certain terms and formulas better.

Do I need Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy to study at Nelson Mandela University?
Yes. Certain programmes require maths as opposed to mathematical literacy in order to be accepted. Refer to the undergraduate guide for the subject specific requirements.

What is an Admissions Point Score (APS)?
APS stands for Admission Point Score. Each Nelson Mandela University undergraduate programme requires a specific APS as a basis for admission to the programme. Applicants will need to meet the APS directly or fall within the testing band in order to be considered for a specific programme.

What happens if I do not meet the APS directly?
Applicants who do not meet the APS directly for a specific certificate, diploma or degree programme but whose APS falls within the testing band will be referred to write an access assessment test before a final decision is made.

If your APS falls outside of the APS testing band you need to consider applying for an alternative programme.
