Registering a birth in East Sussex :
** The birth of a baby must be registered within 42 days. You do not need to bring your baby with you when you register if you would prefer not to.

** The registrar will already have been informed of the birth by the health authority.
** When attending to register you will be asked questions regarding names, dates, addresses and places which will feed into the register entry.
** To help ensure the accuracy of the information recorded it would be useful if you could bring supporting documentation with you
** e.g. passport, driving licence, utility bill, birth and marriage certificates
** Do not worry if any of these documents are not available as the registrar can still proceed to register the birth.
How do I register a birth?
** You can register a birth at your local register office.

How much does it cost :
** Registration is free.
** You will be given a short version of the birth certificate, which contains details of the child and can be used to claim Child Benefit only.
** A full birth certificate will be required for all other purposes, such as applying for a passport, tax credits, etc.
** Full certificates cost £4 each on the day of registration.
** This is a statutory fee that rises to £7 each from the next day, and then £10 each once the register is closed.

** Form – order copies of birth certificates.
** If you need a copy certificate for a birth that occurred in Brighton & Hove, please contact Brighton & Hove Register Office.
** If you need a copy certificate for a birth that occurred in West Sussex, please contact West Sussex Register Office
Re-registering a birth :
** If you are the natural parents of a child and have got married since its birth, or if you wish to add the name of the father onto the birth certificate, then you will need to re-register the birth.

Babies born in Brighton & Hove or West Sussex :
** If your baby was born in Brighton & Hove you are now able to register your baby’s birth at our Lewes Register Office if you wish, rather than returning to Brighton to register.
** Please contact our Lewes Office on 01273 475589 to make an appointment.
** If your baby was born in West Sussex you are now able to register your baby’s birth at our Crowborough or Lewes Offices or our Uckfield Outstation if you wish, rather than returning to West Sussex to register.
