AID New Zealand Aid Programme

The New Zealand Aid Programme is the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme.

Its mission is to support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more secure, equitable and prosperous world. It is managed by development specialists in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

To deliver its mission, the aid programme focuses on stimulating sustainable economic development. It has a geographic focus on the New Zealand’s own region, the Pacific.

How we work:
The mission of the New Zealand Aid Programme is to support sustainable development in developing countries, in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world. To deliver its mission, the aid programme focuses on applying New Zealand’s strengths and expertise in development contexts, has clear priorites, and works in partnerships.

Our people:
The New Zealand Aid Programme is staffed by development professionals within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The team is made up of staff in Wellington and staff based in developing countries, including locally engaged staff. The team comes from diverse backgrounds and includes business owners, educators, diplomats, economists, and experts in sectors such as fisheries and agriculture. Many have extensive overseas experience and firsthand, practical knowledge of delivering aid and stimulating development in developing country contexts.

The International Development Advisory and Selection Panel:
The purpose of the IDASP is to review applications to the New Zealand Partnerships for International Development Fund, provide views and feedback on development strategies, policies and issues, as requested.

The five member panel is appointed by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, John Allen and is chaired by Therese Walsh. Members of the panel have specialist skills and experience in economic development, management and governance, finance, education, health, agriculture and the Asia-Pacific region; as well as cross-sectoral experience in the state, private and non-profit sectors.

Working with the aid programme :
** To deliver the New Zealand Aid Programme we draw on the knowledge and skills of a wide range of people and organisations.

** The New Zealand Aid Programme delivers its projects through companies, individual consultants, NGOs, and public sector agencies. We fund projects in developing countries in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, renewable energy, infrastructure, ICT, tourism and disaster preparedness and response.

** We rely on New Zealand and offshore partners to deliver our aid programme. These include partner country governments, international and regional organisations, other donors, non-government organisations, the private sector and other state sector agencies.

** We invest in relationships with partners that deliver high quality services that match our development priorities. These include a focus on the Pacific region and initiatives that contribute to sustainable economic development.
