1Q. What services are available on this site?:
1A. You can record vehicle purchases, subsequent sales of the vehicles you have purchased, view transactions you have processed online and view the current vehicles in your ownership

2Q. How do I need to purchase a vehicle online?:
2A. When purchasing a vehicle online you will need the following details:
** Vehicle registration number
** Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate Number
** Last six characters of the vehicle chassis number

If VRC/VLC number or VIN/Chassis number does not match the registration number entered please contact us for assistance.

3Q. What is involved in an online purchase transaction?:
3A. You will be asked to:
** Confirm details of the vehicle (registration number, chassis, make/model, colour)
** Enter vehicle purchase date
** Enter odometer reading in km or miles
** Confirm your name and address (as buyer)

4Q. What is involved in an online sale transaction?:
4A. You will be asked to:
** Enter vehicle registration number
** Select buyer category (private, dealer, company)
** Confirm details of the vehicle (registration number, chassis, make/model, colour)
** Enter vehicle sale date
** Enter odometer reading in km or miles
** Enter the new owners language preference (Irish or English for receiving future correspondence)
** Enter the new owners name and address.A Vehicle record is limited to one named registered owner (keeper) and joint or multiple owners are not permitted
** Enter Company Registration Number if selling a vehicle to a company (See 5Q)
** Enter dealer details if selling a vehicle to another dealer (See 6Q)

5Q. What is a Company Registration Number?:
5A. A Company is a legal entity that must register with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). The Company Registration Office is the statutory authority for registering companies in the Republic of Ireland. A Company must hold a Certificate of incorporation. The Certificate of incorporation will contain the Company registration number. When processing an online vehicle sale to a Company you must enter this number. If you do not have this number you will have to contact the company you are selling the vehicle to, or log on to the Company Registration Office website (www.cro.ie) to ascertain the number.

It’s important to note that a registered Business name is not a Company and can’t be entered as a Company, but must be entered under the name of the person who has registered the Business. Religious Orders etc who are not registered as a company must also provide the name of an individual for registration of the vehicle.

6Q. How do I ascertain another Dealers details?:
6A. When selling a vehicle to another dealer you are required to enter the Dealers ID (garage code) or the Dealers name. If you do not have either of these, you can search for the dealer by entering a part of its name. You will then be required to select the appropriate dealer and submit your transaction. For a transaction between dealers, the selling dealer must record the online transaction.

7Q. Can I view transactions I have processed online?:
7A. Yes.You can search for transactions you processed online by accessing the View Transaction List link on the homepage. You will be required to enter a specific date range (to display transactions processed online in that period) or enter a specific vehicle registration number. Where transactions are displayed for that period or that vehicle registration, you can get further details by clicking on the Transaction ID button.

8Q. Can I view the current vehicles in my ownership?:
8A. Yes.You can view details of all vehicles for which you are the registered owner (according to the online system) by accessing the View Current Vehicles link on the homepage.

9Q. Are there transactions that cannot be processed online?:
9A. Yes. You will not be able to process an online change of ownership for a vehicle that has a ‘stolen’ alert or a vehicle that has a status of ‘scrapped’, ‘hire drive’, ‘exported’, ‘end of life’, ‘written off by insurer’, ‘registration number re-allocated’ or where there is an online motor tax transaction pending. Where a vehicle has a stolen alert you will need to contact us for assistance. Vehicles registered in Ireland prior to 1993 are not eligible for online processing.

10Q. When you sell a vehicle online will a Vehicle Registration Certificate issue to the new owner?:
10A. Yes. A new Vehicle Registration Certificate will be issued by post within four working days. The new owner can track the status of their Vehicle Registration Certificate by logging on to www.motortax.ie and accessing the Vehicle Status Enquiry link on the homepage.

11Q. Can an online transaction be cancelled?:
11A. Yes, but only by close of business on day original transaction is processed. To cancel an online transaction, you must access the View Transaction List link on the homepage, search for the relevant transaction and press the cancel button.

If after close of business on day of original transaction the following applies: A letter must be supplied by the dealer selling the vehicle giving reason as to why sale is being cancelled; this letter must be signed by the seller (motor dealer) and the person whose name you have recorded as the new owner. If a Vehicle Registration Certificate was issued as a result of this cancelled sale it must be returned with the letter. Please note the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division, Shannon, Co. Clare must be informed of a cancelled sale as soon as possible as a long delay may result in a refusal by this office to proceed with the cancellation.

12Q. Can an online transaction be amended?:
12A. Yes, but only by close of business on day original transaction is processed. To amend an online transaction, you must cancel the original transaction and process the details again. The procedure for cancelling an online transaction is set out in 11Q. If after close of business on day of transaction, you will need to contact the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division, Shannon, Co. Clare to have the details amended.

13Q. Can a vehicle be transferred into joint names?:
13A. No. For legal reasons it is no longer possible to register a vehicle in joint names. You must identify the person whose name is to be recorded as the owner of the vehicle
