Anyone who has a valid Social Security Number and is a U.S. citizen or eligible non citizen may apply for a PIN.

You must choose how you would like to receive your PIN. Options include :
** Select your own PIN,
** Instantly view your PIN online, or
** Receive an e-mail with your PIN immediately.

Your PIN is considered to be conditional until your information is verified with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

You may use your PIN to :
Sign an initial Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and
Participate in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data retrieval and transfer process.

Once we complete verification with the SSA (1-3 days), you will be able to use your PIN to access your personal information on Federal Student Aid Web sites.

2. Procedure :

The PIN Application is for students and parents who do not already have a Federal Student Aid PIN and would like to apply for one.

The PIN Application Process consists of 3 steps :
Step 1 : Enter Personal Information
Step 2 : Submit Your PIN Application
Step 3 : Receive Your PIN

Select Next to continue with the PIN Application process :
** If you already have a Federal Student Aid PIN, but have lost or forgotten it, you can request a duplicate by selecting Request A Duplicate PIN from the home page.
** If you believe your PIN has been compromised, you can request a different PIN by selecting Change My PIN from the home page.
** If you previously disabled your PIN and would like to begin using it again, you can reestablish your PIN by selecting Reestablish My PIN from the home page.

3. Check PIN Status :

You can check the status of your PIN by selecting Check PIN Status from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page.

If our records show that your PIN application has successfully completed the match with the Social Security Administration (SSA), then we will display the e-mail address and mailing address that we have on file for you, and tell you the date on which your PIN was created.

If we have received your PIN application and created a PIN for you but have not yet completed the match with the SSA, we will remind you that your PIN is considered to be conditional until the match is completed.

If our records show that the Social Security Number, name, and date of birth you provided on your PIN Application does not match the information on file with the SSA, we will provide instructions for resolving the issue.

If we have no record that you ever applied for a PIN, a “No Match Found” message will appear.

4. Request A Duplicate PIN :

If you have lost or forgotten your PIN, you need to request a duplicate. You can request a duplicate PIN by selecting Request A Duplicate PIN from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page. You must provide your challenge answer to request a duplicate PIN.

You must choose how you would like to receive your PIN. Options include :
** Instantly view your PIN online, or
** Receive an e-mail with your PIN immediately.

You should not request a duplicate PIN if you think your PIN was compromised. Instead, you should change your PIN if you think someone else knows it. You can choose your own new PIN, or we can randomly generate one for you. To change your PIN, select Change My PIN from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page.

5. Retrieve Your PIN :

When you use the PIN Web site to apply for a PIN, change your PIN, or request a duplicate PIN, you can choose to receive your PIN by e-mail. If you choose to receive your PIN by e-mail, you will receive it immediately. This e-mail will contain a link to our secure PIN delivery Web site where you can enter your personal information and retrieve your PIN online.

If you applied for your PIN fewer than 14 days ago and have not received the e-mail, you can retrieve your PIN by selecting Access My PIN E-mail from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page.

6. Change Your PIN :

You can change your PIN by selecting Change My PIN from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page.

You must choose how you would like to receive your new PIN. Options include :
** Select your own PIN,
** Instantly view your PIN online, or
** Receive an e-mail with your PIN immediately.

To change your PIN, you must know your current PIN. If you do not know your current PIN, you can request a duplicate by selecting Request A Duplicate PIN from the list on the left side of the PIN Home Page. You must provide your challenge answer to request a duplicate PIN.

7. Update Your Personal Information :

Keeping your information up-to-date is important. To notify us of a change to your mailing or e-mail address, select Update My Personal Information from the list of options on the left side of the PIN Home Page. You should also select this option if you want to change your challenge question and answer.

Note :
Updates to your PIN application are not applied to any other Federal Student Aid systems, such as FAFSA on the Web.
