How To Validate Zero Rating Approval Letter in Jamaica?
Effective February 9th 2015, TAJ has started issuing Zero Rating Approval or Rejection Letters as part of the Zero rating Process. Suppliers who need to verify the validity of Zero Rating Letters can now do so online.

To access this service, the Supplier will be required to complete the following steps :
1. Visit TAJ’s Enterprise Portal and create a new user name and password. This can be achieved by clicking the “Client Login” link followed by clicking the “Create Account” link.
2. Select the “TWE and Zero Rating Validation” link.
3. Select “Zero Rating Letter” in the “I want to search for : “field.
4. Enter the reference number from the Zero Rating Approval Letter.
5. Review information to confirm that Purchase Order number and Supplier TRN information shown in message matches with information on Zero Rating Approval Letter.

1. How do I calculate my income tax?
Gross Salary less National Insurance Contributions (NIS), approved superannuation contribution and the tax-free income (threshold) for the period of payment multiplied by 25%.
The tax-free income is outlined as follows : If you are paid: weekly- $8,484, fortnightly $16,968 and monthly $36,764.
2. What are the payroll taxes and statutory deductions?
PAYE (Income Tax) -25%. Education Tax 2% employees, 3% employers NHT- 2% employees, 3% employer NIS – 2½% employees, employer 2½% (salary ceiling – $1,000,000).

4. On what basis can one make a claim for Income Tax refunds?
** If tax has been overpaid
** If the employee was off on scholarship and tax was deducted
** if the person becomes unemployed and did not utilize the full tax free income for the year
** If a person qualifies for exemptions and this was not applied in calculating the tax.
5. What are the capital allowance rates for a trade vehicle?
12½% initial and 12½% annual allowances. Note that this is calculated on the straight line basis and the annual allowance is pro-rated in the year of purchase.

To validate a zero rating approval letter in Jamaica, you can follow these steps:
1. Go to the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.
2. Click on the “Enterprise Portal” tab.
3. Log in using your username and password.
4. Click on the “Zero Rating Validation” link.
5. Enter the letter ID of the zero rating approval letter.
6. Click on the “Validate” button.
If the letter is valid, you will see a message that says “The letter is valid.” If the letter is not valid, you will see a message that says “The letter is not valid.”
Here are some additional things to keep in mind:
** The letter ID is a unique number that is assigned to each zero rating approval letter.
** You can only validate a zero rating approval letter if you are the recipient of the letter.
** If you have any problems validating the letter, you can contact the TAJ Customer Care Centre.
