How To Get Your Driver Licence :

Introduction :
** This is a step-by-step guide to show you how to get your learner driver licence, graduating to your provisional licence and qualifying for your open driver licence.

** Before you can be issued your learner driver licence, you will need to become a MVR Customer.
** To become a MVR customer you will need to provide evidence of your identity and evidence of your NT residency.
** This guide is for people who live in major towns in the Northern Territory (NT), including Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
** For information about obtaining your licence in a remote area read get your remote driver licence.

Learner driver licence :
** You must hold this for a minimum of six consecutive months before completing your practical test, or upgrading.
** If your licence becomes inactive you must wait another six months as of the date your licence has become active again to complete your practical test.
** For example – if your licence has been suspended, disqualified or cancelled any practical test will not be honoured.
** You must complete another practical test six months after your licence becomes active again.

Provisional driver licence :
If you are under 25 :
** If you are under 25 years old you must hold a provisional licence for two years before you can upgrade to your open licence.
** A practical test is not required to progress past the Provisional licence stage.
** A zero blood alcohol content (BAC) condition is applied to your licence for three years.
** This condition will be removed the day after you turn 25 – unless you remain a Provisional licence holder.

If you are over 25 :
** You must hold this licence for one year before you can upgrade to your open licence.

DriveSafe NT includes :
** six hours of theory to prepare for your driver knowledge test
** online tools to manage your driver training
** free learner and provisional licence
** DriveSafe NT participant pack
** 10 subsidised driving lesson e-vouchers to help with the cost of professional driving lessons
** two free driving tests.

Pass an eye test :
** You must pass an eye test when applying for your driver licence in the Northern Territory (NT).

There are two ways you can have your eyesight tested :
** at the MVR office
** or provide a recent eye examination from your doctor or optometrist.

Learn the road rules :
** You must learn the road rules before you take the theory test. This is called the driver knowledge test.

To learn the road rules you can either :
** learn the road rules in the NT Road User’s handbook and take a practice driver knowledge test.
** or enrol in DriveSafe NT – see below.

DriveSafe NT :
** DriveSafe NT is a driver education training and licensing program for all motorists in Darwin, Palmerston Katherine and Alice Springs.
** You have to pay a driver education enrolment fee before you enrol.
** The DriveSafe NT program covers all driver education elements over a minimum six-month period.
** You have two years to complete the course once you are enrolled.

DriveSafe NT includes :
** six hours of theory to prepare for your driver knowledge test
** online tools to manage your driver training
** free learner and provisional licence
** DriveSafe NT participant pack
** 10 subsidised driving lesson e-vouchers to help with the cost of professional driving lessons
** two free driving tests.

Pay a fee and receive your provisional licence :
** After you pass the driving test, you may take your test sheet to an MVR office where you must pay a provisional licence fee to be issued with your provisional driver licence.

** If you are a participant in the DriveSafe NT program you don’t need to pay a fee for your provisional licence.
** You will be given a provisional driver licence with the same photo on your learner licence, unless you request a new photo.

Under 25 :
** You will receive a two-year provisional licence with a Z condition for zero blood alcohol content (BAC) during your provisional stage and a further year after.

25 and over :
** You will receive a one year provisional licence.

Conditions for all provisional drivers :
Your provisional licence has driving conditions, which include all of the following :
** zero blood alcohol concentration
** not exceeding 100 kilometres per hour
** displaying your P plates at the front and rear of the vehicle.
