EONI Apply Electoral Identity Card

In Northern Ireland the law requires that you produce one of seven forms of photographic identification when you vote at a polling station.

The Electoral Identity Card is produced by the Electoral Office and is one of the acceptable forms of identification. You must be listed on the Electoral Register to get a card.

How to Apply?

If your Electoral Identity Card has expired, please note you do not need to renew it to vote at a polling station – identity documents produced at a polling station are no longer required to be current, as long as you still look like the photograph.

The Electoral Office will be carrying out a number of Registration Clinics in the coming months. Visit a Registration Clinic to register to vote and apply for an Electoral Identity Card – your photo will be taken for the card on site.

Note : you will need to provide your National Insurance Number on the registration/ID card application form. Visit the Registration Clinics page to view the schedule of Clinics.

You can apply for a card by post or in person.

Applications By Post

The application form can be downloaded from the Register to vote page.

All postal applications for an Electoral Identity Card must be accompanied by a colour, passport-sized photograph (write your name and date of birth on the back of the photo) and one of the forms of photographic identification listed below.

** Your passport or other valid form of identification
** A proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement
** A completed application form

You can find the application form on the Electoral Office’s website: https://www.eoni.org.uk/Electoral-Identity-Card/How-to-apply The processing time for an EID application is typically 2 weeks. You will be notified of the outcome of your application by post.

The Electoral Identity Card is a free card that is issued to all eligible voters in Northern Ireland. It is used to verify your identity when you vote at a polling station. The EID is also accepted as proof of identity for other purposes, such as opening a bank account or applying for a passport.
